In produce we have a closer usually two guys. They break down the pallets(8) of produce and put the cooler items in the cooler and the outside items on the steel shelves. They dump all the compost and trash, remove extra pallets and wash and sanitize the floor. Then they need to stock the floor with produce backbreaking work? Yes. Well we have one closer who just had gall bladder surgery and another who left to join his wife who's in the Air Force. I work on Wednesday until 10pm with no closer scheduled. I hope to God they get me a guy!

My whole crew got held til 11am today I wouldn't mind if it had been for someone needing surgery and another person with a spouse in the service that's very important. If someone has to go for that reason I'm on it. I took the days off surround my father's wake and funeral. You have to.
But since St. Patrick's day wasn't on the weekend people had to get hammered on Thursday and again on Sunday. Isn't that nice?
Brian said to our crew when he broke the news to us 'Thursday might have been St Patricks day but today is National moron's day!'

If they asked off ahead of time for a holiday or their birthday that shouldn't be a problem, but getting bombed knowing you've gotta work is another story.

If they asked off ahead of time for a holiday or their birthday that shouldn't be a problem, but getting bombed knowing you've gotta work is another story. That seems to be all the blue collier jobs these days. Thunderbird has the same problem with staff at the family business. Hung over Monday and holiday illness. Obviously that's why the law has it that if you miss the last scheduled shift before or the first scheduled shift after a paid holiday your employer is not longer obligated to pay you for the holiday.

Thats the next thing I'm not willing to give up the pay. But a St Pat's day is not a legal holiday. I know you meant when there is a holiday that's why that law was made.
I find it disgusting that people are that self indulgent to blow off work for these reasons. And sometimes because its their birthday.

Stupidity. I had my first blow up at work since I've had this job. Obviously its limited how much I am allowed to go off on someone and Its probably now a blow up to most people but for me it is.
This person comes in and wants prices and information on a basketball stand with the rim and net set up. The assembly that is best for your driveway is the kind that has its own pole, backboard the rim and net and the base actually has two wheels and a flat side. That way it can be moved by tipping the stand a little and rolling it to where you want it.
You do have to assemble it when you get it home.
There's another style that you mount to the side of your garage. Its just a backboard though.
We have three brands of the full assembly and the prices vary. This guy reads that basketball set ups start as low as our lowest price and is angry that that referred to the mounted on the garage wall style.
I explained that thats the cheapest because it doesn't come with all the other pieces. He felt the other parts should come automatically. We went on for a while I ended up saying "the only thing you have made clear is you want to spend as little as possible and get the most out of it. It doesn't work that way. This is a you get what you pay for world."
My boss didn't seem to mind that I said that so its all good.

Ditto! We once had a lady try to barter the price of a dish set .Our Associate Tony said "Lady, this isn't the swap meet. You are not in Tijuana. You are in Wal Mart!" It took us all along time to stop laughing after that" ;D

Really? Negotiations on retail products? That's like going to the movies. A ticket is 9.00, 'Ill give you 7.' Well I have a family of 5 how about 35 for the whole family.
I can't believe that someone actually did that. Pretty soon we're going to be dialing 2 for English if we're not careful though.

beangirl I love that story. it's crazy when they buy something cheap to begin with then try to knock down a few bucks. once I was at salvation army and someone actually asked for a discount because there was a stain. I am just like really lol. the clothes are so cheap I don't even look at the price tag and I am poor.
and phil that's sad you had to stay that late because people feel it's more important to drink. they know the next day they work so they should not be doing it. the excuses people come up with not to work baffles me. the economy is not stable and it wouldn't feel good to be unemployed. for the people who were drinking I think they need a lesson. to stay without pay for 10 hours. hopefully that will sober them up as they make it up on their day off.

Angel607 that's a good point people need to pay attention to the value of their jobs.
I have mentioned that my family's business is in construction. My brother known at lewasite as Thunderbird runs the business. He has reminded people who aren't in the mood for work that there's a large amount of able bodied workers looking for employment.

Last night I had to take out trash. While I was out there this cardboard rains down from the platform. I start picking it up to throw out, but the teenage boys told me to leave it. It was their excuse to stand around and talk outside. I was so mad. I went back in, brought out more and threw it down. Then they started whining they only wanted "their" trash on the ground, not the stuff I put on top of it. If that's how they were going to be, I just walked away. One guy was sent home, but I'm not sure why. All I know is while I was outside he was just sitting on the steps smoking.

That's pretty sad if you ask me. Like Jay Walking if you ever watched that show, it's amazing how these people on the streets don't know alot of common knowledge stuff.

That really happened. I can't believe some of the things people don't know. Demona I mentioned 'Jay walking' in a video once. Q: what year was the war of 1812? A: 1977.
Q: Who was the 1st President of the United States? A: John Kennedy.
Q: Today is Columbus day, who was Christopher Columbus? A: The lead singer from a rock band.
All I can say is I hope they interview a lot of people and only show the funny ones who didn't know but I'm not so sure. And when those 13 year olds debated if there's an ocean between the US and Europe.
Specifically 1 person said that they're going to drive to England. Jason said you can't there's the Atlantic ocean. They debated for a while and more than 1 person disagreed. Then they asked me.
I've turned it over for a few days maybe they overheard a parent say they're driving to 'New England' but I doubt that.
