I have a different side of myself the members of this forum don't know about. I'm an avid treasure hunter. Because I enjoy it so much is partly the reason I declared a minor in archaeology. Quite a while ago my mother got me my first metal detector for my birthday. She tried, bless her heart, to get me a good one for as cheap as she could find. But the machine wasn't the best one...definitely good for a beginner that doesn't know anything or doesn't really care, but not for someone who's as focused and absorbed as I am. I used that first detector a few times and never found anything, just a few nickels and pennies. But yesterday I finally had the good fortune to get my hands on a good one. A friend of my father has gotten older and is no longer able to devote the time and energy to the hobby, so for a few payment installments (totalling less than 1/3 the retail) I received this: www.kellycodetectors.com/garrett/gti2500_treasure_special.htmThis is a very good one. I went out to the beaches near my apartment and spent four hours walking around. I started off not finding a thing, but then heard from a nice beachgoer that it was all new beach pumped ashore. Once I went to the area where people had been, I did better. I didn't find anything valuable or significant, but I did find some interesting things. I found:A huge bolt the thickness of a half dollar. Perhaps from the jetty? A very old rusted fishing lure A single dime Plenty of garbage:A few beer cans and a huge Arizona tea can. Two pieces of exposed wire that were VERY sharp. Threw those in the trash. Someones empty inhaler. Tossed that too. Something big, metal and square. Too deep and big to dig. Most likely a piece of rigging to a nearby pipeline. And the most interesting find of the day:The rim/wheel to a car. Buried in the sand. Couldn't bring that with me but I took a picture instead. What that was doing there I'll never figure out. So, that's my day. Not great or terrible, but it was a lot of fun and I gained experience with the new detector. I'll post some more in this topic as I do more hunting and come up with more stuff.

I like to find stuff too. I have found jewelry, Keys, cell phones etc. I don't keep stuff. I live with a pack rat. I will usually turn stuff in to Lost & Found.

I think it would be neat to find old things. I know most people are looking to find something to make themselves rich but even just to find old Nostalgia would be rewarding enough for me.

Yar! I not understand ye, me hearty!
Do ye be meanin' if'n I be carryin' a whip fer bullin?

Heh!
I have a prospect an old property (built in 1925) that has a spookie history.
The 'Hairy Hand House' is up for sale!! With 10 acres parcel included.
The HHH is on one acre. I could build on the rest or sell it off.
I'm not sure what to do.
I've got Halloweenish plans for the one acre (and, believe me, it's spooky)

That sounds like fun. I'm kind of a packrat but only to a degree. I keep things that I honestly believe I can use, not things that are a long shot to ever need.
If you find treasure Jersey that would be sweet. Even if you don't find millions of dollars you can at least find some really interesting things like you said. It also helps you figure out what might have happened before. Like what is now my back yard might have once been a road to the creek behind my woods. I have no way of knowing that but maybe if I found a broken wagon wheel in the woods and perhaps spend my life thinking somebody threw it there I could find some other things that might lead to the wheel broke off that wagon, the pitch to the creek is kind of steep. Maybe 150 years ago the pitch was more gradual and some falling rock changed it to how it is now.
And they replaced that wheel leaving the broken 1 there and it's still here.
Things that Jersey's detecting might uncover.
Mahnarch that does sound spooky.

I haven't updated in a while, so I'll detail today's outing. I went to a different beach today on a tip from a friendly passerby. He told me to go to beaches that have bars and restaurants right on them. The reason? Drunken bar patrons wander out of the bars and wind up on the beach, where any amount of screwing around results in lost coins and jewelry. I went to one of these beaches and had a good day. My items worth listing: A quarter, two pennies, a silver ring (my first piece of jewlery), and a still working, pink, women's cell phone. If I can get the phone charged up enough to find its original owner, I want to offload that as soon as possible because I won't be caught dead with a pink cell phone. Anyway, that's my day. It was definitely a nice outting. Might actually go back there tommorow and hunt some more areas of that beach.

You found some interesting things. A pretty pink cell phone. I decided to get off my butt and restart my photobucket account so I could post pictures. Heres the nice ring I found. And here's that blasted cell phone. I turned it on to show it works. Three words: DO NOT WANT!!

I know a lot of guys who use pink cellphones.
Not my cup of tea though. I like the idea of treasure hunting. My wife and I just have a different idea of what constitutes treasure.

I'm going up there next weekend. I'll get some video. ......I will not B&E this time...... Promise! ;D

I would like to have Jersey bring his metal detecting to train tracks. You would be surprised and amazed what falls off or gets thrown off trains and ends up on the ground within a short area. Then animals kids on quad bikes, or just weather moves them or covers them up a bit and they resurface soemtime later.
I really can't discuss this in detail because there's an investigation going on. But my crew had to dig areas of about 300 yards surrounding tracks that are near a river bed roughly 50 miles from where I live.
THe case might end up on Court TV if it's ever solved. Our crew has periodically been digging for almost a month. I have been sent there about 4 times. It all varies. We are not even told exactly what we're looking for. They just tell you dig and if you find anything other than dirt and rocks even a coin place it in a box and give it to the troopers.

I think finding old things in obscure locations would be so great. You wonder who was here before you, how that got there or was that field or woods something else at 1 time.
I have found lots of things on camping trips that are very interesting like that. I was little and my brother found a few old arrow heads my dad figures were from 19th century bow and arrows.

Recently went on a treasure hunt of my own, but it was in the basement at my grandparent's house. Last week I was looking for stuff to sell at the garage sale my parents and I had last Friday, and in a closet in the back basement, I discovered a box. At first I thought it was full of some old dishes, but upon opening the box, I saw that it was not dishes; it was my old Nintendo game system, and it had all the games, the controllers, the duck hunt gun, and all the wires to hook it up. For years I thought that my parents had sold it at a previous garage sale. I'm hoping to get it hooked up soon, and I'm hoping that it still works.

If it's been stored nicely like that I would think it would still work. As long as the atmosphere wasn't too damp like Basements sometimes are. It's probably going to be just fine.
