Now. I only got one set of handcuffs and one patrol car... So, we're going on the "honor system", here.
Does everyone promise to drive themselves to the jail so I can process you and lock you up for a minimum of 8 hours?
[Also, you can't drive without a license. So, you can hang on to those until I need them at the PD.]
OK, Everyone! Follow me!

I would suggest he thrived because of his ability to explain his study and teach things that the rest of us could make use of and learn from. I do not see being a drug user making that possible or making his talents better. He can explain it better than I can. marijuana-uses.com/mr-x/If you don't want to read the whole thing, here are some relevant excerpts. Pay special attention to the very last sentence.

Hallucinogens make us see things in a way we might not have seen before. That has been my experience. If you don't consider that "thriving" then I don't know what is.
I do not advocate abuse, but I definitely support responsible, educated drug use. We are free to do with our bodies what we please.

Furthermore, the drug schedules in this country and other countries do not make sense unless viewed from the perspective of big government & big business. There is a double standard: The alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceutical industries have a lot to gain from lobbying for continued relaxation of alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceutical regulations. On the other hand, law enforcement agencies have a lot to gain from the continued funding of the drug war. No one in the establishment, as far as I believe, has actually sat down and compared alcohol, tobacco, and pharmaceuticals to cannabis, LSD, and mushrooms. The latter three are far less dangerous than practically ANY pharmaceutical drug, including aspirin.

If you take that approach then steroids enhance muscles and numb pain.
You do raise a good point about the drug war with taxation and law enforcement. Moonshine is only illegal as a result of not paying taxes and following FDA regulations. Obviously that's not as simple as that but that's the highlights of it.
Pharmaceutical drugs when not used properly, and sometimes even if they are used properly, can also be damaging as you said.

I have known plenty of people to drink or party away sorrow or celebrate something good.... it ends up just being an excuse. I never thought getting blitzed really takes your mind off something. You sober up and your problems are still before you.
I think its better to face them head on and resolve them if possible.

I agree.. then when you do sober up you have added one more problem to the mix.

I've known some people to be shot on account of drug dealing. I've seen drug abuse ruin potential. I've said that a few times so I don't need to elaborate on this now.
