For two days it was being fixed because of a virus. On Sunday a pop up ad came on I couldn't click off. It kept popping up every few seconds saying I had multiple viruses and to make the so-called program delete them, you have to pay. I didn 't recognize this as a normal program, so I had a feeling it was a virus itself. I was right, when I brought it in to Staples I was told there are several like it that masquerade as anti virus and anti spyware programs and are a scam to trick you into paying and giving out information. Whoever invents such nasty things should be shot. I'm not a happy camper being out $200 for repair now.

I deal with those at work, some of them are easy to get rid of, others are like a turd that won't flush. I've had to backup the person's files and completely reload windows on a few of them. They come in so fast that they blindside the real anti virus (in our case, Symantec.)
Some people just need to get a life.

I dont know who makes a good computer though. I've had HP, Gateway and E Machines I haven't noticed much difference in any of them.

Its not much the computer itself its more the protection. I've had better luck in recent years making sure my norton antivirus is updated. I have as many spam filters that I can. I also am a stickler not opening e mail that I don't know the source. The smallest virus might not crash your computer but what it does is act as a, well just what its called, a virus. It slows the computer down and makes it pause. Not always does it wreck it but a hand full of those bugs make it navigate slow.

I see that a lot of people are using the Iphone now. Its soon going to not replace the desktop but make it not as necessary. I dont have one yet but I know I'm going to have to get one soon just to keep up with schedules.

The Droid and the Blackberry or whatever else is going to be the way. I still use a old style flip phone. It texts, takes voice mail and makes calls. I'd say that's enough. But soon it wont be. Brian is the supervisor on my shift. He gets instructions for our crew via E mail and then checks his E mail through his phone right away. Soon we're all going to end up doing that. Jason wants a Droid to play video games through the phone.

I was on prepaid, but I was texting up a storm so I just do a texting plan now. I only call if I have to, but the majority who talk to me have such short messages for me it's better to text them. That and my phone is off more than on. I do want to upgrade at some point once I find a phone and a plan that's not going to wipe me out.

I also still have the old fashioned flip-open phone, and it makes calls, has voice mail, takes pictures, records 10 second videos, and it has text, but I don't use the text feature as it costs too much with my plan. I really would like a new phone so I can send text messages, and upload vidoes and pictures online without it having it cost a lot of money, and maybe even to play some video games.

I don't see how people can use the interwebs on their cell phones.
How do you "mouse" around and click on stuff? Also, how do people read a full web page on such a small screen?
I'll stick with my rotary cell phone for a while longer, I guess...

Some of these phones have gotten carried away with what they can do. I think its overkill but soon enough they're going to phase out what most of what we have known as a cell phone it just happens that way.

I do a majority of my web browsing on my phone now. I have an original Motorola Droid, but I have rooted and overclocked it to run at 1.1 GHz. It's basically a handheld netbook now.

The old version had a ball, now they have a square in the middle that you use like a laptop's built in mouse. A Samsung Epic has a touch screen, and so does a Droid. For non-smart phones, you just use the up and down, forward and back. The internet I think is more limited on those though.

Also, how do people read a full web page on such a small screen? Here is my view of the forum: My browser bar is hidden, but it has all the features of a desktop browser (bookmarks, tabs, etc.). My rom (basically a user-modified operating system) even has ad blocking enabled. I'm posting from my phone now.

I have the iPhone 4 and am posting from it right now. It doesn't have any buttons (save for the power, volume, and home buttons) so it's not as clumsy as I've found blackberry or other smartphones with the tiny plastic buttons. I have big hands and large fingers and I find the iPhone 4 screen big enough to accommodate me in that department.
As for the web browsing, I see Lewasite the same as I would on a desktop or laptop (nice and green) computer. The only difference is that my finger tips are the mouse pointers. And to answer Mahnarch's earlier post, using the motion of placing two fingers on the screen and spreading them enlarges what I'm viewing to make it easier to read.
I was wary about smartphones like these for the longest time, and generally figured I was doing fine with my cheap-o Samsung flip phone. But I found that I adapted nicely, and faster than I thought I would.
Because of the web browsing alone I would never go back. Love this thing.

I think its going to get to the point where the Iphone will be it. I dont have 1 yet I still have the open flip but Brian from work looked up all of the times and dates of last inspected crossings through his Iphone to figure out how to prioritize the assigned work for the shift. He also looked up what dates due are some other projects right through the phone.
If I get 1 I could post at Lewasite periodically through the night. lol
