A 10 year old boy, whose parents are flaming liberals, goes to a job fair at his school where he is met by a CEO of a local corporation.
The CEO asks the boy, "What would you like to be when you grow up?"
The wee lad answers, "I would like to be President of the United States."
The CEO asks him why.
"I want to give the poor and homeless free houses and money.", he says, proudly.
The CEO perks an eyebrow, "Well, son. You don't have to wait to be President to do that." The CEO interlaces his fingers and leans toward the boy, across his desk. "I tell you what; I need someone to pick up sticks and mow my yard. I'll pay you $50 to do this and, when you're done, I'll take you into town so you can distribute your money to the homeless."
The boy thinks for a second and finally says, "Why don't you just have the homeless come over and clean your yard?"
The CEO stands, shakes the boys hand and says, "Welcome to the Republican Party, Son."

Well. I'm a republican born and raised. We operate a contracting business that never had union workers. Whenever we had to work in a venture with a company that was union the demands would anger my dad he would end up saying "union workers and their damn demands, they spend a whole day refusing to work until demands are met in that time you can have honest hard workers just have gotten it done."
I'm not as grumpy as my dad about this but I do see what he meant all my life when he would say things like that. So I was never much of a union person.
The theme here though as I see it doesn't really have to be a democrat or republican venture but the democrats do believe in more programs and more government mandated programs.
That does bode well when a democrat takes office early on too because government jobs are created right away. YOu neeed people to operate those programs.
I do like the academic side of Mahnarch's joke. I also feel that the government can't do as much for you as you can for yourself.
If Bill Gates was on a government program he never could have grown to that size. Our company family operated since the 1960s my dad started it from the ground up.
We operate sometimes because we can under bid jobs. We're not paying union workers with demands, and therefore our employees are not paying union dues. We can then concentrate on giving the customers a better price and spending on supplies or even higher wages and less on a union.
I am not always saying unions are bad though.
Programs like welfare and other disabilities are a little too easy to get.
They have their place though. People who are ill, permanently injured, perhaps blind. There's lots of set backs that can prevent a person from being able to maintain a job.
Its much more limiting though. Programs are set at a maximum even unemployment has a maximum that once you reach it you're maxed.
If your pay is about 1500 per week, the maximum employment would be something like 490 a week. Not bad takehome pay for not going to work. But if your pay had been 4000 a week some weeks you still get 490. And that stays at that.
You don't have the capability to improve on that you're granted your check and that's all it is whatever that amount is.
When you're on government assistance the government has some say as where you can live too. Your rent can't be over a said amount when you're on assistance. Sometimes that moves you into an undesirable neighborhood unless you're very lucky.

It's a fact that's been a reality since the Democratic National Party (DNC) [Democratic Socialist Party] has been in existence. *** Let me give you guys a little history lessen - even though it may be a little long for a "Joke Thread". Right Wing. Left Wing. Back in the day of Kings (Mahnarchs....errr Monarchs.) there were still Senates and Councils. In those Councils there were those who believed that the citizens should have free will to go about their lives and do as they wish. The King was merely a central place to air grievances. There were also those who believed that the people should be told what to do and how to live. The King gave and took as he thought benefited him and his people (mostly him - and his "Left Wing".) These two groups sat on the Senate Floor on each side of the King. The 'Free' thinkers on the Right. The 'Progressives' on the Left. This custom was brought over to the US when they forged their Congress; Republicans on the Right. Democrats on the Left. Though they have different names, they share the same principles. Look it up. [There is also a story told of a Right Wing Emperor who removed his head Left Wing Senate member and replaced him with a horse. His words, "This is what I think of you! You're highest commander is now a horse!! You are lower than him! This still holds true, today. Yet, the left wing still lies and exists, today.] People really take off and drop what little they had to finish as soon as the shift ends? Where I work we have to stay until we're done, we can't just spring for the parking lot at a certain time, because there is no certain time.

Welcome to the 'Non-Union' Party!
There is.....err...WAS as company in Western Grand Rapids that decided to go Union.
Every year those drivers HAD to have BRAND NEW SEMI TRUCKS AND TRACTORS. Every year those dock workers HAD to have BRAND NEW FORK TRUCKS.
Every year those line workers HAD to have BRAND NEW EQUIPMENT.
That company only lasted 3 years after going "Union".
It couldn't keep up with the costs.

Danny: I know how you feel about Unions. I feel that same way politically, however that was Thunderbird not Danny there. Thunderbird is my brother, Dan is Blastgirl's brother. Obviously one of the strongest unions in all of labor is the baseball players union and I am a member of it. Not so much because I love it or even support it too much, but I have to be a member of it to have the job I have. In fact there's many restrictions some of them are that I'm not supposed to take a heavy stand on controversial social issues. I have sometimes anyway but it's against mandates.

People should be treated fairly, because there's companies with assinine rules and they get rid of people for little reason at all, and can be real slave drivers. New equipment every year is so wasteful, what's the point? Sometimes new "state of the art" stuff doesn't turn out so great anyway.

Hold on Slip. You have a right to express a different opinion if you want, but this man has a right to talk.
Forget Democrat and Republican for a minute. Well forget it for longer than a minute.
As expressed before in this forum I have 3 children. In fact you all know 1 of them. Starting in 1997 and going until at least 2025 when my youngest child would turn 18 assuming we don't have any more, and I am not saying we will or wont because you never know.
So my job as a father is to provide a home and meals and things to wear for these 3 children. Its not required but its a nice touch if I can also provide some entertainment for them. Like eating out sometimes, movies, toys, games, and whatever is entertaining for recreational purpose.
What happens in this span of 18 years or perhaps a little longer if it takes a little longer is to train them to become self sufficient. To grow beyond the needs of saying 'dad can I have....'
For the moment most things do fall to me to provide or say 'no you don't need that.' The old standby 'ask your mother' still works.
That is really the idea here is government should not support you all your life. It's supposed to get you started and you can pick up at some point.
When Jason turns 16 he is not getting a new car. Mahnarch has his position on this too, he has expressed it very clear. There's a chance that by then my truck will be 4 years old and therefore paid off. We will probably be looking into replacing his mother's Buick. At that point the 7 year old Buick will be an 11 year old Buick and we might give it to him for a payment plan he can meet.
I am not going to buy him an elaborate new car. However he can make plans to become financially able to buy his own if he can learn to do something that pays enough that he can get a brand new Carmaro when he turns 16, it better be legal though.
As a father I am a provider but not forever, I am also here to teach them to someday not need me.

So if a legal law abiding citizen if laid off because the economic downturn, you shouldn't have to help him because you want to go to the movies? How the hell did you get that out of my langthy post? This clarification should nto be necessary but all right. I have often said that programs have their place. They're not to live on though. I have about 150 a week taken from my paycheck that goes right into the system. I have no real problem with it. Unemployment is here to hold you until you find other employment but it's not something to live on. Its different if you're permanently disabled it's another matter altogether. In 20 years in teh workforce though I have known a lot of people. Not just a few but lots to milk things and not even look for jobs until their funding comes to expire. Even getting it extended a few times. The program too in its proper use is designated to sustain you while you prepare to again become sefl sustained. I can't make it any clearer than that. How you got that other conclusion is something I can't imagine. I'm sure you were just needling me anyway.

You took that out of its proper context then.
I am saying in that portion that as the kids' father I must feed them provide a roof, and something to wear until such a time they're able to provide that for themselves. I am not mandated to let them see movies, have toys or games but it's a nice touch to let them have some entertainment too. Since 2, 6 and 12 year olds don't really have an income yet that would fall to me to provide.
Is that clear enough?
