Depends on what you're using it for. GUI, it's over-rated, I'd rather crack a version of windows because there's simply more you can do.
Anymore, Windows Server 2003 handles networking better than Linux currently, but not by much. For servers, Linux is great, but you have to know how to use it without a GUI, terminal, if you will, or you just wast resources.
So if you're using something like Trustix, or something like DSL-n without the GUI, then yes, Linux is very powerful. But other than that you're probably just an elitist that wants bragging rights.
All in all, it really depends on what you're doing with the OS, there is no "ultimate" or "greatest" OS, they all have strongpoints and weaknesses.

This is true. I actually don't work with Linux much, but had to post this to bring out the inner geek in me. Interesting note: I was recently on a Delta flight back from going to Utah and they rebooted the servers for the TV screens (touchscreen movie/games/tv/music thingies) and I saw a lot of gibberish on the screen involving linux. Don't remember any of the gibberish any more, but it's cool that airlines use Linux. My parents say they worked with Linux, Solaris, and other variants thereof. Still, the GUI is what I've seen as the least attracting part, and it's legal, so therefore loses to cracking windows . Also, it's about the only thing in the world with a mascot of a penguin. Long Live Tux!

I didn't say I had cracked Windows, I'm just saying I'd rather crack Windows than using Linux GUI as my main desktop. Hence, I was making a point.

My engineering class this quarter focuses on programming. We've primarily been using Linux (Red Hat to be exact) to program in C, although now we're getting into MATLAB in Windows.

Redhat is enterprise . . . Is there a specific feature that they need on Redhat, or did they just get suckered into spending money?

I've never asked the specific reason.
And this is Ohio State we're talking about. You act like the university cares about tossing around money.

I use Linux GUI. I Know, its not efficient blah blah blah. I use it because its simple (well, sorta) and free, and I don't play games anyway (the only ones I play are Starcraft/warcraft and those can run in linux through wine). I could crack Windows (I actually have a cracked CD my friend gave me right here) but why bother? I really only use my computer for homework, music, and graphics design, and I can run anim8or through wine, blender for rendering, and GIMP for the (rare) 2d work.
I can, of course, run my computer from the terminal, I just don't see the need when speed isn't a problem.

So I decided to get SSH Secure Shell and XWin32 configured correctly on my laptop. No more having to go all the way to the engineering computer lab if I need to program = pwnz.

Right now I just use it to transfer files from the OSU Engineering Linux server to my computer.
C can burn and die right now. A program is just not working out for me. Makes sense, but doesn't work. Meh.

I didn't say I had cracked Windows, I'm just saying I'd rather crack Windows than using Linux GUI as my main desktop. Hence, I was making a point. There really is no "Linux GUI" though. There's KDE, GNOME, Fluxbox, and more, I think. I don't like the KDE interface (too big and shiney) but I really like GNOME actually.... which is what I happen to be using right now... ubuntu, with GNOME. And it pwns.

Ubuntu is the worst resource hog I've ever used.
Anyways, saying that there isn't a single Linux GUI (which wasn't telling me anything new) doesn't void the (my) point.
