Has anyone ever heard about the New River? It's a freshwater river that flows from Mexico into California. I first heard and learned about it last night when I was doing a project for my Critical Discourse group presentation. We were covering the topic of water conservation and protection. Last night was the first I ever heard of this river. I'll tell about it.
The New River is the most polluted river in North America. It is a sludge river of around 100 different contaminants, ranging from industrial chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides, and to round it all off, human sewage. The river itself is a passageway into the U.S. that hundreds of illegal immigrants use every month to come into this country illegally. Apparantly the stench of this cesspool doesn't deter them- it stinks to high heaven of rotten sewage. But the trick they use is that border patrol officers won't get near the river, it is so nasty. The illegals swim in it willingly, and once they get into America they proceed to spread the wide range of diseases and infections they pick up from swimming in the river.
I'm wondering what's taking so long to get this river in better shape. It's insane at how far it passes EPA standards for clean water. I think it's way past high time for our government to put pressure on Mexico to clean this mess up.
Here are some nasty pictures of what it looks like.

Gross.
(By the way, can someone tell me how to post pictures like you guys are doing in the find a google picture game? I just don't get it.)
