That's a good sign of making progress. Hopefully he will get his act together that way.

WHAT???!! He took a test for this?
You have to go to college and get a Criminal Justice certificate and/or be an MP in the military to get a job like that.
How'd he swing that? Ex-military? He seems too lazy for that lifestyle.

He has been accepted to the academy which is drivable from here by about 45 minutes. It will take about two years before he's a trooper.

It's funny how some people who don't deserve it get the good jobs...and the hard workers who care bust their ass for nothing.

It's funny how some people who don't deserve it get the good jobs...and the hard workers who care bust their ass for nothing. It does seem that way. There's a lot of that where I work. We have a guy his name is Brian. He's about 28 maybe. They skipped him for a few things because he 'hasn't been there long enough or he's too young.' This guy is willing to double shift multiple times a week, if there's any grid lock of any kind he will make a decision to get the job done when there's all this crap from other people about how if its' wrong who will take the blame? Brian should be the coordinator I don't care if he hasn't worked there as long as me, I don't care how old he is. This guy is an agressive problem solver and we need more people like that. And then we have all these 'Union elite's that make sure they aren't doing a single thing that's 'not my department.' The do nothingers always know their rights too. It's sickening.

Where I work there was this guy who'd make lame excuses to come in late or not at all, half ass the job, stir up drama, and in the end it was his crappy attendance that did him in, but before that it was just one warning after another which he ignored. What made me mad was his attitude. Almost 50 and lazy as all get out...and stubborn. We all need to help throw out the trash or clean up, and he never bothered to help before so he argued with me and got all snippy about it when I told him cardboard didn't belong in the container he dumped it in. He then decided to call me bossy. He kept it up until I told him he needed to stop it and that it definately wasn't cool. The sad part is, another guy, who was a good worker until he showed up, had made friends with him and had sunk down to his level for a while also protesting the fact we all need to help eachother and that someone shouldn't have to ask when clearly they need it, and about clean up. Just one idiot can ruin it for everyone.

I didn't know that part - it's a 'crash course to a Criminal Justice certificate. I was thinking he just went down and took a test and was going to be on the force "tomorrow". That makes sense.

Ive grown accustomed to people who milk the day as much as they can. They will take as long as possible to get a job done to try to get paid for doing the least.
I hate that mentality if you're here to work you should be aiming to get the most done in a shift's time.

I hear ya, Phil. I can't stand to be a lazy butt. I just want to get 'whatever' done as fast as possible.
I'm surprised I don't have a pile of speeding tickets yet. Trucks are posted at 60mph in Michigan. I usually set cruise at 64, 65mph. That way you can always argue that you were doing 62, 63. Well within the limit of overspeed.

Goal oriented people are usually the most efficient anyway.
Half the World would get so much more done if they didn't spend their time trying to come up with excuses why it can't be done and just focus on doing it.

That's were I think 'Salary' has it's benefits but, with a twist.
Pay people the same amount of dollars each week and give them a list of things they are supposed to do each day.
Instead of making the jobs 9-5, let the employees leave when they get done. The faster they work, the sooner they can go home. Simple as that.
That's what I love about driving. I'm not constantly looking at the clock, going, "1 more hour", "20 more minutes".
I park....and I leave.

Because of some of the guys at work's lack of ambition I hate to say it but there are too many guarentees.
There should be some conditions to the benefits and leaving early sick day stuff.
If I call in sick, I'm sick. If I take a day off there's a reason and it's not because I don't feel like going in.
If it's slack and they ask me if I want to go home I might do it but I don't ever ask to go home.

Have you ever looked at a train derailment and suddenly had a cough? lol.
***
I got a RR question for ya, Phil.
Two weeks ago CSX tore up an intersection right outside our warehouse and without that intersection we now have to drive an extra 3 miles to get around and CSX pulled all their equiptment out after tearing it up.
It's just rails. No Ties. No concrete. Nada. And trains still come through regularly.
Latest word is: They stopped the reconstruction because of an 'Environmental Study'.
What does that mean? Is this common?

It's not common but it does happen. When they're doing an environmental there's no telling what they're looking for or how long they'll need. That kind of inside info is usually kept from shovel men. Like mainly me.
But they must have dug it so that there is still enough ground supporting the tracks and like I have said you can't detour a train quite as easy as you can a car by going down the road and turning left.
If they determine that the ground is contaminated they will be undergoing major construction and those tracks will get shut down. They will end up digging about 4 feet past the deepest known contamination.
They'll get envirnmentally tested ground to put in its place, it will have to settle for a time and then they'll put the tracks in and pave last. They might put temporary bridges over the hole if the road is too far from the next passage to open up the street but that's up to them.

That sucks.
D'Y'know it costs us $3 in fuel per truck to go around this detour? And we have up to 17 trucks per day that have to do it.
It's been a few weeks and the bills are adding up...
Can't you call CSX and do something about this?....for one little ol' Zeeland crossing?
Say, "This is Phil in HQ! Get that 80th street crossing done, now!". lol.

I would guess Phil's department's hands are tied once they do the environmental. I would think they're all at the mercy of the "Lab."

IT does suck and CSX hands are tied at that stage its in the lab's hands, and there's a little Uncle Sam involved too. But everybody curses out CSX at that stage so for sure they would like to have it done and set up. What I'll never understand is how sometimes that's a major issue and other times they kind of toss top soil over it and look the other way is beyond me but what do I know?
