Well, that depends on the contract. It's all different.
If you're under a contract you may be paid weekly, quarterly or even however they arrange it.
I currently do not have an agent and my pay is directly deposited every 2 weeks into an account. I am paid in full by my team and am currently in their hands about next year. If the final year of my contract is activated then I'm in I will know by the first of the year if they're going to keep me.
If not I can seek employment with another team. I am not allowed to negotiate with any other team unless I am formally released from my current commitment.
This is where they have me. I obviously can't leave because they have the option on me, and yet they can draft or have a prospect assigned to the club and release me at any time. Or they can even hold me under wraps until December 31 and let me go then. Or decide then to activate the option.
If that happens then I get 15 percent up front and the rest dolled out in every other week increments until October 1. And on October 1 I will be an unrestricted free agent. There's a good chance my playing career will be over in October of 2009. But you never know.

classicblast my dad read a article told by a baltimore orioles player in a magazene interview
he just had me read it. its saying that in 1977 eddie murray started at batting practiuce. he hit so much that he was impressive to all the team
the guy intervewed in the book was doug desenseay and he said that they all watched to see what kind of glove murray put on and it was a 1st base glove so they all shook hands with lee may the 1st base man because they figured he was going to get let go.
but murray was the dh for 2 years and after he replaced may at 1st base may became the dh but they both stayed

That happens pretty often and it goes just about that way.
A guy excels at the bat you cross your fingers that he doesn't wear the same kind of glove as you or it could mean doom for you.
Doug DeCinces was a really good 3rdbaseman in his time.
Its worse at this level. You go to hotels during road trip you're set to rendezvous with your team in the lobby of the hotel. Well sometimes there's a new guy there. You don't know this new guy and you've never heard of him. You only hope he doesn't play your position. Yeah it happens all the time.

I saw a hockey game where a guy just fell on open ice. First he looked around to see why a penalty was not about to be called. Once he realized there was nobody even near him to even make up a penalty call he looked at the ice, his skates, and his stick.
Classic, if you strike out do you look at the bat?

Classic, if you strike out do you look at the bat? Of course. If I don't hit the ball there must be something wrong with the bat. Or the ump made a bad call.

classicblast, I heard more than 1 person say that any pro baseball player could play 1stbase do you agree to that

classicblast, I heard more than 1 person say that any pro baseball player could play 1stbase do you agree to that Players are not encouraged to say that outloud but that's basically the opinion of players and managers too. If a National League team has 4 outfielders that hit about the same but one doesn't run as well or perhaps doesn't throw as well. What if they have a good 25 year old catcher and a 36 year old catcher who still hits well but has early stages of knee trouble and doesn't crouch like he use to? What do they do? They're in a league with no DH. So they make that old catcher or fourth outfielder a first baseman all the time. You're not encouraged to say that in the locker room but yes all pro players can play first base.

Classic, I heard a term called 'Designated for assignment' have you heard of that and if so what does it mean?

Classic, I heard a term called 'Designated for assignment' have you heard of that and if so what does it mean? hahaha Where did you hear that term? It's not a good thing. It's the baseball equivalent of being laid off. You're not on a disabled list but you're removed from the active roster and basically in a state of limbo until the management decides what they're going to do with you. It usually means you're done but sometimes not. If somebody else is willing to cover your contract you're good to go, if not you have to see about getting your contract severed so you can try to get a position elsewhere.

I just re read the questions and now that my playing career is over I haven't really begun to do what I though I would want to do once I was through playing.
I am much less decisive about this than I thought I would be.

That's not something you have to decide right now. You found a job to get through the time being you're not obligated to stay with it if something that's a better fit comes along.

I am not sure that the jobs I would like are so plentiful but I'll do something productive until the custom fit comes along and maybe it never will but at least I'll do something in the meantime.
