I was positive the Red Wings would win so I didn't give much though to anybody else. The squids you know.

Its that time again. Pens careless in game one against Ottawa. I live half way between Pittsburgh and Buffalo so Phil and I grew up following both teams.

I was just watching the San Jose vs Colorado game and San Jose defenseman Dan Boyle accidentally put the puck in his own net in overtime. That's a killer not to mention the publicity he will be getting for that.
I will say this though. Hockey teammates are more forgiving than football teammates would be. I hate to admit it or seem disloyal to my sport but baseball players would be less forgiving too.

To put the puck in your own net in overtime in a playoff game no less is an absolute no no!!!!
People make mistakes I know that. Sh!t happens, that's a favorite phrase but this is worse than that. That Boyle scored the opening goal in the next game of the series though. At least he did something in an attempt to redeem himself. I don't know if you can for that though. But if the Sharks win the series they'll all forget the error.

The big series starts tomorrow.
I'd like to follow it closely but most of days in the summer I'm out to see various games most of them close by.
I like this part better because with only an occasional exception I get to go home.

So the Chicago Black Hawks have jumped out to a 2-0 series lead.

Hawks fans are pretty insufferable around here, so I wouldn't mind seeing the Flyers win.

I might be a PA boy, but I can't route for the 'Broad Street Bullies' so I'm for Chicago in this series.

Its good not to have a sweep though. Its better for the sport to have it go at least six games.

The Black Hawks have a chance to clinch it tonight. So far the home team has won every game in this series. If that holds true the Flyers would win tonight forcing a game 7 and then the Black Hawks would win game 7 at home in Chicago Friday.
That isn't saying that a visiting team wont win any games in this series.
Classic, you can probably answer this question more than anybody else of this forum. How big is home ice/field advantage?

Chicago wins.
To answer your question, Phil, I think it's a pretty good advantage. You go into a game knowing you have the support of your crowd. Ultimately you have to win the game no matter how much support you have. In the case of Basketball courts, ice rink perimeters and football fields you're right they are the same size.
You probably know this but baseball outfields are different sized and even different shapes from park to park. The bases are 90 feet apart and the mound is 60ft 6in from the plate in every park. But the outfield can vary.
The home crowd is to your advantage and there's something psychological about playing a home game. And as you said more often that not the home team wins the game.
I will say this though. When you're slumping there's nothing so welcoming as a road trip to try to get your act together without as much pressure on your shoulders. So there is something to be said for playing on the road.
