So, I usually snowskate during my free time at school. For those of you who don't know what snowskating is, it's like a skateboard with a blade instead of wheels. So, like a snowboard, but much smaller and not attached to your feet. Anyway, we usually set up a picnic table with some ramps, and generally make fools of ourselves while whoever isn't skating takes videos of it all. Within the past week, I have gone bigger and crashed harder than ever before. The snow has melted and frozen over again several times, and is razor sharp. As a result, my hands and wrists are covered in tiny cuts. And it really hurts to type, for some reason (apologies in advance for any spelling errors).
Of all the friends who participate, I crash the least. But when I do crash, it's usually something special. For instance, today I was over in a nearby park, where some kids had built an iced ramp three feet tall. The first time I hit it, I landed it and skated away. So, I decided to try again. The second time, I slipped forward off the board right before the ramp. The top of the ramp caught me in the gut, I flipped over onto my head, and wound up on my back. I stood up immediately thanks to momentum, but if I hadn't had that then I probably wouldn't have stood up at all. My body's been acting strange all day since then.
My friends and I are thinking of making something resembling a Warren Miller film, just with us hitting various ramps and tables, a couple crashes, and perhaps the obligatory powder shot. We've got footage dating from about this time last year, meaning we've probably already got enough material to make something, but it'd be nicer to have something that looks good. None of us are anything resembling talented, but at least three of us can make it across a picnic table in one piece. Just today, we started planning out shots beforehand.
First, there's this ramp right next to the stream running through the park, about three feet high. The creeks 10-15 feet wide, so there's no way we're going to try jumping it, as someone would end up breaking bones. However, it would make a perfect shot for buttering the ramp. In this sense, buttering is going up the ramp and spinning on it, then coming back down, usually in one fluid motion. With the camera positioned correctly, it looks positively amazing. See, the creek has about a four foot tall embankment, so the ramp looks like something jutting out over a cliff with running water and trees in the background. A couple of kids just came up to us the other day and gave us a rather large plastic ramp. It seems like there's quite a large snowskating population at the school, because they found it left over from some other kids' setup. We've got access to picnic tables, rails, and possibly quarterpipes if there's enough time and snow.
As my name suggests, snowskating isn't the first thing I'd be doing after a snow storm. But it takes no special equipment, maybe just a shovel for preparing landings and stuff. If and when the video is finished, I'll post it here.
Since no one else here has probably even HEARD of snowskating until now, use this thread to discus winter sports, favorite pastimes, and why the Pope is a perfect example of a fascist ruler within the context of the Vatican.
