Johnny Horton sang the song. Shortly after that guys named Homer and Jethro (Maybe the original Weird Al Yankovics) made a spoof song. But Johnny Horton's version was very famous.

The Producers...Mel Brooks in his prime...

I have to admit that when I saw it in 9th grade, I had no idea who Mel Brooks was. But this movie enlightened me to Blazin' Saddles, History of the World Part 1, and Young Frankenstein.

Best part of the movie (besides the musical) - Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder are holding auditions for the part of Hitler. A man comes on stage and begins his pyschadelic acid induced rant. He finishes it off by sliding into the feeble position near a wall, peeling a banana, and shoving his watch into his mouth. Zero Mostel shouts "That's our Hitler!". I rofled.
