L A Clippers owner Donald Sterling is being forced to sell his team and being permanently banned form attending basketball games for saying racial things in a phone conversation with his mistress.
The board of NBA governors are looking to remove Sterling who has owned the Clippers franchise since 1981. players, fans and press alike are angry with Sterling and of course you have to be careful what you say.
Because so much could get taken out of context and thrown in your face are the reasons I would not tell my name for the years I was a forum participant and still playing minor league baseball. I wasn't even an important member of my sport but it was a job to me and I didn't take any chances.
Obviously Sterling is racial. Most people are saying "how can he be he owns a basketball team where the majority of the players are black"
Well that's true, but in a way that's just business to Sterling. He hires coaches and managers to build him the best team possible regardless of race and pays then what the basketball market says he has to in order to have a competitive team. And his team is competitive.
Now, he in a conversation with his mistress says that he doesn't want her taking pictures with the black men and posting them on social media.
He also says that he doesn't want her bringing them to games involving his team. And that conversation gets posted publicly and he gets revealed.
This man was not crystal clean at any point. He was accused of funding a prostitution ring. He has also been accused of some other things that are not ethical. He is a former divorce lawyer and investor but he must like Basketball or he would have bought the team when he did and once he could make some money on the team and then sell for a profit he would have.
I am interested in other people's thoughts here. I see the root of this being the furry of a scorned woman.
I have been exposed to pro sports for the last 20 years of my life although granted on a much smaller scale. And lots of owners and managers say much worse things in discussions that are not private.
I played for a team where the two catchers shared duties. One was Puerto Rican and the other was an American who's last name was Spanner the manager openly refereed to them as "Spick and Span" I know they didn't appreciate it but nobody really complained. Maybe they should have but that was more directly offensive than what took place with Sterling.

They're fining Donald Sterling 2.5 million dollars. It was not an open conversation but this girl blew the whistle on him. Can they make him sell his team? I mean that is his property its like being made to move I would think that the neighbors might hate you but they're stuck with you if you're a property owner.
Banned?? I could understand it more if he said it in a public venue like John Kerry;s comments about Israel. that'd going to blow over but this isn't.
That's not to say that Don Sterling isn't a bum for starters he is a married man with a girlfriend he publically masqueraded with and she is a black and Japanese blend and then he makes racism remarks. But What he said and even more the way he said it and the reaction that has triggered is just showing our culture as getting softer and softer.

This is big news here in Los Angeles. He is banned for life. Most of us Angelinos already know he is an arsewipe. He has always been . A man with money but an arsewipe. I say, Don't let the door hit you on your way out.

I have no doubt he's a scumbum but I still don't know that what he did and said is something he should be removed for.
To answer Phil's question, yes they can do that with 2/3 of the owners vote. The owners are a board of governors they can oust each other that way.

Ok, I did not realize they had their own 'court system' but I guess that makes sense. I am in agreement that what he said wasn't very nice, but he did say it in a private cell conversation he did not say it to the press or to a players agent or to the fans. I really think in this case it was between him and her. The big mistake roots from a married man having a girl on the side.
Sensitive eyes click out Sgt Enforcer has the mike
When you're mzrried that is it. you don't have affairs. If you do you are subject to what comes about.
Here we have a inter racial girl and a 80 year old team owner a man who has been married for 55 years. He gets a young glamorous girl to flatter him and look good at parties. And a young body to have sex with. She gets the budget to feed high maintenance needs.
She could have just said 'its My social media' of course that could get her cut off from the hand that feeds her but then you have 2 choices, conform or take a chance he might cut you off.
She took it public to bring him down. Who is really going down here? Thus man is 80 years old and very rich. The team will sell for a ton of money and she gets nothing. Soon she will fall into obscurity with Monica Lewinskky, Anita Hill, Fawn Hall and the others.
I guess you just can't say anything to anybody but what happens to freedom of speech? you can say what you want although there may be consequences for it, ok.
Had he said that in a public format this would be easier to see that they want to ban him from ownership and even going to games *that seems like too much* though to say he can't even attend.

There's a board of owners and if they get 2/3 that approve of him being removed then he has to sell the team he can appeal legally but that lkaw is in place so I doubt that would matter.
Just like its difficult to get 2/3 of congress so is this difficult to get the percentage though.

I think Sterling was a cantankerous old prick and that was a chance to get rid of him. I think if he was more ;liked they'd find a way to slap him on the wrist and let it drop.

Front page of the L.A. Times. Sterling told Anderson Cooper that "Who is Magic Johnson Anyway? A man who has bedded down every woman in town and he has AIDS" Douche Bag! Yeah, he is lacking in tact, anyway. While I am not a fan of Magic Johnson, I remember Johnson told the owner of the Lakers Jerry Buss he would leave the team if the coach was not fired and Buss fired the coach. The thing is I suppose a coach is easier to replace than a high caliber player like Johnson but the players shouldn't have this kind of power. And Johnson did become HIV positive because of a little too much getting around. But Sterling now figures he has nothing more to lose so he says that...

Actually, Phil, coaches and managers are let go pretty often on account of a player who is felt to be irreplaceable or nearly irreplaceable. And Magic would have been one such player.
But Sterling is doing whatever he can to take pressure off himself. I mean he could try to defend what he said or how he said it without involving Magic Johnson at all. In stead he says basically who is this guy to talk? It doesn't really work out here.

I heard about that and she managed or is managing to have Donald declared mentally unfit. Its kind of funny. That's going to be the defense for all that happened. His womanizing made all this trouble when it's all said and done. He had a woman on the side and they fought and she basically destroyed part of his life.
He's still a multi-billionaire but he didn't want to sell the team but the team is sold. He didn't want to get out of the business but he is out of it. And he is *whether declared so or not* mentally competent and it is a punishment to be taken out of there its not like he is too old to care. When you're mentally together and no matter how declared he is not senile this hurts and is punishment.
My only problem is that this was a private discussion he did not say those things publicly.
So if I text a vent complaint to someone about my work can I be made responsible?
I made this video a few years ago could I get fired or disciplined through the company for that?

It is like that, Phil and in professional sports its even worse. I can't stress that enough. Obviously that discussion was not for all eyes and ears but it got out there and that's how it messed his life up. And for those reasons I remained as anonymous as I could in discussion board topics.

It still comes down to he had a lover on the side, and they fought she turned into the spoiled kid who didn't get her way and it blew up. Classic, I remember your concerns but those are good internet precautions anyway. Maybe if Sterling said that in a forum like this using a handle rather than his name it would be harder to throw that at him. not really
