boston.cbslocal.com/2013/04/29/nh-man-loses-life-savings-on-carnival-game/this story made headlines and it truly made me scratch my head trying to figure out why anyone would do this. a man dropped $300.00 in a few minutes trying to win at a carnival game. he lost it and went home to get his life savings of $2,600.00 and lost it on a game. so now all he has is a banana with dreadlocks and he called the police because he thinks the game is rigged. after $10.00 wouldn't you just give up? I go to dorney park every summer and I don't even think their prizes are worth it. I play all in good fun but would never drop that cash on a game.

How much would it cost to buy that banana with dreadlocks? I'd say at most $200. This is crazy.
Obviously we have always had a gambling problem in this country its a compulsive issue and always was. But when a guy risks $2600 to win stuffed toys as a prize he's just plain off his rocker. Its as compulsive as a drug addiction when you start doing that.
From the time I was a kid I always wanted to make headlines. I dreamed of doing it by playing in a World Series or at least being the hero with a timely home run. Doing something heroic like saving a community would be cool too.
To make national headlines for being a jackass? You're better off staying an anonymous person. hahaha.
Obviously we know what kind of headlines this guy made.

I don't doubt that games are rigged to an extent. I suppose also if you really understand the game you can circumvent rigged games too.
But judgment comes into play too. Like is winning the prize more important than paying your mortgage, buying groceries and whatever else?
I think not. Total translation.... that guy is a moron and needs to be beaten with a stick.

i agree he is a idiot. I stopped at $40.00 at sands casino because I was tired of losing. I herd he was trying to go for a xbox also. I don't think I would risk spending all that money because usually prizes at amusement parks are not that great. I won big stuffed animals and one had a hole with cotton balls falling out. maybe he was going for some other stuffed animals to but he did it himself wasting his life savings over things he didn't need. the games should not be rigged but you should know when to stop losing your money. I think Phil has a good point we should beat him with a stick so he won't do this next time. it might knock some sense into him hopefully.

A coffee shop restaurant I go to a lot has a stuffed animal claw machine. There's some staff that kept trying to get a prize and running their register out of quarters. The manager told the girls that they only have so many quarters on tap, and after an amount of quarters he told them he can't spare any more change for their addiction to the game. Some of them got angry but I know why he said that. If he runs out of change for his customers because of that its a problem to him.

The next thing is once they're out of dollar bills to trade for quarters they would just take his quarters thinking its only 50 cents, that adds up after a while.

A friend won an animal for me once at a park. Just holding it made the stuffing all shift so there are sections that are thin. Not worth it.
If I go to casinos, and I've only been once, I'd have a limit and if I'm out, I'm out.

If I go to casinos, and I've only been once, I'd have a limit and if I'm out, I'm out. That's the smart way. Once a year I set up a batting cage at our City Carnival. I did so originally when I played ball. I still do it for charity. Cystic Fibrosis is the primary one. The cage is set up that you can challenge me. For $5 bucks we each take 5 pitches or for 10 bucks we each take 12 pitches. It's a 10 day event and I'm pretty whipped after it. A former teammate Carlos will take over for a couple hours a day as will another former teammate. Well that's not a rigged game, but I played 15 years of minor league pro as did Carlos and another guy who helps us out still plays. So it is possible to win a prize if you get your pitches just right but obviously we are more experienced at hitting baseballs than people who challenge us. So we usually get our money for the cause.

That's a little different though. Its not rigged, its a difficult challenge to out bat you and your ex-teammates. But its not rigged everybody has the same chance. If they caught 1 of you guys at a tired moment it is possible to win a prize if they were good at the game themselves.

There was something on TV about how those games are rigged. Like the basketball toss uses an oval hoop and whatnot.

All these games are rigged or use deceiving language to hid the easy way to do it. For example that game where you have to bounce a bean bag off a board and into a tub usually says you cannot lean on the table, but doesn't say anything about leaning OVER it.

That's a good point. Blastgirl's grandfather has an old mallet to ring the bell game. Where you hit the the base with the hammer hard enough to ring a bell. If you adjust the spring you can not possibly hit it hard enough to ring the bell. That if that wingnut is set that tight the base will not move far enough to send the ball up to ring the bell. Meanwhile if you adjust it a little different you can get it to ring without hitting it very hard at all.
The idea being that if you need to get people interested and give out a few prizes you can let a few people win.
The ropeladder game has the tension set to toss you on your back almost instantly. Like Phil said though someone with some baseball experience can sometimes out hit us in a five pitch duel. But like I said, usually not since we have more experience. Our game isn't rigged though.
