i don't really know if this happens in other stores but it seems like slackers keep getting chances to mess up when they should be fired. with Diamond it should not have taken 2 years to fire her when she was in the break room all day, taking longer breaks, not doing her work and calling off all the time. me and my co-worker were talking about kmart and it's not fair these younger kids are taking our hours when we do all the hard work picking up after their crap. Ashley the one who would talk to the undercover security all day and not answer pages when we paged her and refuse to do the returns. so she was given another chance and I found she was taken out in handcuffs saturday for stealing $75.00-100.00 in gift cards. adam was watching her and saw what she did and reported it. another guy was doing the same thing and was caught. when I was walking on the floor I almost bumped into Anna's lazy boyfriend richard looking on his cell phone. and yet these are the people I am losing my hours to. I really don't get kmart. their cutting down everyone and this year turned out to be worse then expected. my co-worker pat got 10 hours so what I am getting is pretty good compared to her. i'll probaly give things until christmas and see if it gets better but at this point since the store has been so dead I have a bad feeling kmart is going under. I do hope before christmas comes they catch whoever is leaving the jewelery doors unlocked. I have a feeling it's Michelle because the 2 times I found the doors unlocked she was covering but security said they have to catch it on video. my co-worker said she once found the keylocks on the showcase. if this stuff happens around christmas time something will end up stolen because of some stupid idiot not caring to lock things up.

I am sick of kids looking at their messages and not focused on the job at hand. There's ways jobs can deal with the phone problem. In a retail store where I currently work and a Kmart and most restaurants the phone is not necessary to the shift.
Contractors like my brother's staff or where Phil works its probably necessary for the workers to have a phone to be given instructions or report back on what they find.
Obviously those would be a few exceptions. Otherwise I don't think phones on the job are all that necessary.
So they could make people check their phones in at the door you can check your messages at your first break, turn the phone back in and then check them again at lunch time and then you can claim the phone back at the end of the day.
Are most people needed to be reached during the work day? If its a family emergency they could call the store and have the person paged. Most messaging is gaming and gossip not needed during your time that someone is paying you for.
No second chances should be offered for stealing.

we have this at wal mart. A lot of cashiers got D days a few weeks ago for slacking off and calling out too much. This is the most severe punishment there is. I have to Red line cashier almost everyday because these young ones call out all the time. This takes away my time from my department. As far as stealing? You do that you go to jail and are fired right off.

I am all for the check the phone in idea. We could do it at my work too. We have crews of 6 most of the time. Only Brian and I would need a phone. The high management doesn't call a 20 year old crewman for a change of plans. They call the foreman or the associate foreman. Most times the crew men aren't sent alone on a job but if they are then they could bend procedure and let them have their phone.
They don't need to stand off and text when it's work time.
I can't believe how today's attitude is so lax. People need days off for stupid reasons and then complain when their check is less. Taking days off for their birthday!!!! Are you serious???
There are times you need days off. When my dad died I took the days surrounding the wake and funeral. I had saved vacation time but I would have taken those days without pay if I had to because its that important.
I don't think tolerance to slacking is necessary. You either do your work or go home. Logging up hours when you're not earning your keep is something I will not become understanding to.
There's so many people wishing they had employment right now that It sickens me that some people complain about having to go to work. I'm thankful to have that chance.

i wish kmart employee's would get punished like walmart employee's. it seems the managers just tolerate this kind of behavior. people getting caught on their phone at work should have their hours cut. as for calling off that really ticks me off. I had to cancel my plans for someone years ago and cover her shift when she came in the store shopping. I was suposed to go to the water park. around easter when we were really busy 3 people quit with no 2 weeks notice so I had to stay 14 hours. they don't seem to care that not coming in screws up other people. but calling off on their birthday I don't think that is a special day to not come into work. you can plan a celebration when you have off. birthdays to me now are just another day.

All stores are having financial problems. That's a fact of a recession. What they should do is look over people's track records for calling in sick or what things they have not done properly over lets say the last year. They should then just give the hours to the dutiful workers and lay off the ones who routinely call off.

With all the unemployed today you would think its a buyers market for employers. I would think that you can hand pick workers. I know a lot of people who have lost jobs in this economic time that would likely be better than what kind of service we seem to get these days.
How long you've been there should not be a factor for anything but a tie breaker. If 2 people are in line for a perk you can only give 1 person the perk then perhaps that would be the tie breaker. Otherwise who does better work should be the source for the decision.

classic I agree with you. it seems retail wants to keep on hiring new people that are young who screw things up and the people who actually work have to suffer. yesterday I herd from the lead in menswear they cut full time workers to. it's horrible. people who call off a lot should not have more hours then people who worked there 11 years and came in to fill for people who can't come in. I would think in a recession people would value their jobs more. I don't think we need all these new people unless it's around christmas time. last year around that time they didn't have enough people. last year around spring worked really good hours 8-9 days straight sometimes. extra money was good. now there's just nothing. we had some managers that would not put up with slackers not helping out but they had to go to another store in pa. I think kmart needs to be more careful because we don't want anymore stores to close down.

They want to hire new people pay them minimum wage, give them part-time hours so they can use that as the reason not to pay them any higher than minimum wage and they're wiling to sacrifice service and experience figuring anybody can hang up a shirt. In theory that might be true but it takes more valuable staff to assist customers in a way that you get the sale from those who are somewhat unsure if they want to buy or not.
