In Italy a Ocean Liner called Costa Concordia ran aground about 300 yards off shore on Friday the 13th.
The ship seems to have hit a reef puncturing a 160 foot gash in the side of the hull therefore causing the ship to roll onto its side.
Of course the water is not deep enough for the ship to fully sink in its current location but save for that we have a modern day Titanic story.
The ship hits a reef vs the Titanic hitting an ice burg further out to sea. The captain and crew believing their ship is invincible and therefore doubting the need to take hard evacuation measures until they admit there's an emergency too late.
Luckily in this instance the ship is close enough to shore and in shallow enough water that help can arrive more quickly and surviving is more possible because shore is visible from the ship. If you hit the water uninjured you could probably swim that far unless currents render it impossible which nothing like that was said.
And this captain survived to stand accountability unlike Captain Smith a century ago.
I for 1 will admit I do not have much knowledge of ships and controls and devices so equipped. But I know something about machinery and technology and I have trouble understanding how this can still happen with all that today's advances allow us to safeguard against.
My dear wife love her unconditionally but locking keys in her car was one of her bad habits. The Buick she has now will not lock if the keys are in the ignition. I have to assume ships have more advanced controls for safeguard than a Buick.

I love the story of the Titanic. I saw a documentary on A&E right after it had be found. It was a two part special and letters were read that were wrote by passengers and crew members after it was hit. Captain Smith was to Blame. "The Sea is a Jealous Mistress." I stand by the Ocean and am awed by the shear power if it.Never misjudge it.

I have started following the story I didn't follow it since Friday when it happened. I remember about 4 years ago a ship called Sea Diamond ran aground and sunk too.

All the technology in the world cannot make up for human errors and misjudgements. In the end we have a captain who apparently wanted to show off his ship and purposefully took it off its pre-set course and into dangerous waters. Usually there is a reason for such things like pre-set courses. He got what he deserved for being an idiot and now people have died from his stupidity. Yes, thankfully he is around to stand trial and answer for what he did.
Soon he'll be wishing he drowned.

That does show some very unsettling new light on the subject. The lives and well beings of over 3,000 people is in your hands you can not afford to take a chance.
I am sure he thought the water would be deep enough to accommodate his ship but he was wrong and this is the result.
Next the ship will have to be scrapped as it can not be repaired most likely. Once they capsize thats the end of them I have always been told. It can't be left there as it is not sunk in deep enough water to prevent it from being a navigation hazard. And its on the coast of a resort area and the residents are not going to want it left there. Once it became neglected and left in salt water it would rust badly and become very unsightly. The residents aren't paid a premium to live there and look out at the sea and they're not going to want to look at a half sunken ship that in a short time will be a monstrous mountain of rust.
Not to mention fuel and oil or board. We are 70 years bast Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona still leaks a small amount of oil.

I never thought about what to with the wreckage of the ship. I guess the Sea Diamond sank enough to be not a navigation hazard. I still have to think it leaks stuff though. If the Arizona is still losing oil that ship that sank only 4 years ago must still leak a lot of fluids.

I am more angry about the captain leaving the ship than I am about it running aground. I am not happy that it ran aground especially when it was clearly carelessly steered. Obviously once the accident happened he needed to lead the rescue effort and not just leave the ship.
Obviously the captain's responsibility is the the passengers first, the ship second and himself only after as many passengers as possible have been rescued and the ship can not be saved only then does the captain leave the ship.

This is just a terrible situation things like this should not happen today.
