Does any particular new Years eve or New Years day stand out in your memory?
Well I have 1.
It was 1999 going into 2000. I was not high seniority at that time so that meant I worked every single holiday. While it pays outstanding to work holidays I would rather have them off as I have finally begun to have happen.
Well anyway on this night back in 1999 there was no chance that I would have the day off. I was on overnight as I still am and there was all the talk about the ever so manacing Y2k.
That come midnight the ball is going to drop and all the worlds electricity and utilities and everything electronic was going to shut right off.
Even my department was briefed. For about a month before hand we had generators set up at all the main buildings on our grounds.
Meanwhile there were others set up at all the amtrax depots throughout the area.
Myself and a number of other sets of 4 man crews were given a gameplan as to what we were going to have to do if the Y2K bomb really happened.
Each crew was put in place and ready to perfomr service in a specified order.
I was driving a bucket truck along with a couple other guys who were in a van awaiting what turned out to be a whole lot of panic over nothing.
The ball dropped the year 2000 came and the world kept turning. Can you imagine that?
We waited in anticipation of what was about to happen and it was nothing at all.
I remember holding up my cell phone as the countdown took place and there it was 1/1/00 12;00am
Gee who would have guessed on that?
I also remember remarking that could you imagine being at the power company that night and having a chance to click the lights off for just a second. I guess that sounded funny to us that night but in reality that would likely have caused heart attacks.
But that was a lot of leading up to what turned out to be a nothing thing.
