so first we had a small earthquake here and now irene is coming. the hurricane this weekend scares me. I have read where jersey will get 10 inches of rain which is insane. however in our area pa it could be bad. they said we could be without power for 3 days. I don't think we will have to evacuate. but it sure has been a crazy week. I might have to take off work on sunday depending on if there will be road closures due to flooding. we had a tame july and august here with storms passing but wow august looks to be a wild one. brace yourselves for the hurricane this weekend and stay safe.

I am watching CNN right now and they are really concerned about Irene. It is a Category 2 right now. After Katrina I believe the National Weather service is taking no chances this time about issuing warnings.

Its 1 of those things. They like the hype. The press that is. The storm most of the time doesn't fully live up to the hype but when they take the nonchalant attitude it lives beyond prediction. The worst storms I can remember were mostly unpredicted.
I think its still better to be over prepared than under though. And like Beangirl said after Katrina which was among the worst of storms if not the worst. Or the worst since Camille in 1969.
In the Harrisburg area running north and south of the state there's the Susquehanna river. The Susquehanna in Sunbury, Danville, Shamokin Dam, Hummel's Warf, Duncannon areas has regular flooding.
Most notably it has what they call the 36 year flood. That's when it has excessive floods not that any floods aren't excessive. But I remember them talking about the 1900 flood, I've seen many pictures of the 1936 flood, and I was only a year old for the 1972 flood but I remember the construction takes 3 to 5 years to restore it.
I remember my dad bringing pictures of railroad tracks flipped at a 45 or 90 degree angle. I've seen that myself when the dirt under tracks is washed away.
We were gunning for that 36 year occurrence in 2008 but it didn't come. I swear a lot of people were disappointed. Terrible as it sounds I really think they were disappointed.

i herd this could be one of the worst hurricane's to hit in 50 years but well see. for my area I herd the worst is coming in saturday at midnight until 8am sunday. i'll have to check on updates because I might call off sunday. at kmart it was a madhouse. we completely sold out of D batteries. flashlights flew off the shelves. we had a lady visit our store for the 1st time and she didn't know we closed at 10pm even though we paged repeatedly and it's on the door. funny thing was she told the service desk the end of the world is coming tomorrow. im pretty concerned with the roof at kmart because we have had problems with it leaking. I herd some guy say he will be in early sunday in case anything happens.

I heard that too I really hope it doesn't happen that way. Obviously the devastation is endless. They're not finished rebuilding from Katrina six years ago.

Phil I remember you made a video that that flood was due at the time of your video. Stay safe all you Easterner's. I feel for New York.Storm surge alone could really damage Long Island.

i hope everyone on here is safe. I came back from work at 10pm and tornado warnings were issued for philly where my friends are. 9 deaths were reported with this storm. the things to worry about now are trees falling and power outages. kmart employee's wanted to leave and close down at 8pm but were told it's not bad. when I got out though roads were bad and flooded already. we should of closed early. I hope everyone stays safe during the night and have flashlights ready to go in case something happens.

Beans, that kind of heat has driven me crazy this summer and I can't wait till its gone.
As for the hurricane, some wind and rain is all we got up here at my girl's place. I stayed with them since her dad had a recent surgery and shouldn't be lifting much. Some area houses flooded and thousands of people in the coastal areas lost power, but fortunately for us there wasn't any flooding and we only lost power for a little while last night. So we came through just fine on the Jersey Shore. More of the inland people got it worse for flooding though so it wasn't like this thing was harmless.

It doesn't look like there's the devastation we were expecting. That's not to say that any hurricane is without its share of damage. We were being prepared for another Katrina like situation.
I still will not say that a lot of damage and loss of life is not a terrible thing to have happen.
I still would say that if you're area was set to bug out you did the right thing if you bugged out. I know there's also other problems. When a county or area is deserted looters come. Its still less terrible to be looted than to be destroyed though.
There's some schedules of repair crews being distributed at my work. I don't know what might happen as far as that goes. If I am not online for a few days late this week or early next week you'll know I've been assigned to repair crews.

It might not have been a category one but there's a lot of damage and rebuilding and digging out.

omg 105 degree weather. I don't think I could even make it outside in that hot weather. that's dangerous to be out in that heat for long periods of time.
jersey im glad to see you were all safe during the storm. it was pretty scary with those tornados popping up in places. I went back to work in the morning and we had 3 firemen walking around the store. by the office in the employee's lounge a piece of the ceiling came down and they fixed a leak. some of my friends lost power for days but I didn't. lots of trees down but we made it through okay.

It gets pretty hot here a lot of times. I am told California is not as muggy even though the temperatures are often as hot or hotter.

It gets pretty hot here a lot of times. I am told California is not as muggy even though the temperatures are often as hot or hotter. That is very true.99.9% of the time it is a dry heat. I am very used to it . The valleys where I live are the hottest. Downtown Los Angeles is a little cooler. The beaches are 10 degrees cooler.

I've traveled enough that I have seen just about every kind fo storm there is. The scariest was a hurricane.
