Elizabeth "Betty" Ford, former First Lady (President Gerald R. Ford) passed away.
I would not have been a fan of Betty had I been older when she was more in the news. She had left leaning values even though her Husband was a Republican the Ford Family had Liberal social values she more than he.
She did revolutionize the position though. She was publicly sited as being an Alcoholic, and spent four years after Gerald left the Presidential Office drying out.
After her dryout she started the Betty Ford Clinic.

i will admit I wasnt burn when betty ford was first lady but I think the news is making a hero out of a old lady who got into drugs and booze at a time her country needed her most.
ford became president because nixon scandals forced him to resign or face impeachment hearings where he more likely than not would have been removed
it was up to jerry ford and his wife to try to unite an angry country and in some ways betty failed to do that
i am only 14 I wasnt born I just think thats how it goes down

Well, Jason those are very good points. Betty Ford did contribute with many other things too though.
For one thing she did work very hard to bring awareness to breast cancer. You are right though. Being a time when the national morale was not at its highest having a First Lady dealing with addiction is not a helpful thing to national morale.

Either way Betty is an American icon. I agree Phil. What she has done for addiction is beyond wonderful. The Betty Ford Center for Addiction in Rancho Mirage has helped thousands of addicts, famous and not so famous kick drugs and alcohol . It was one of the first centers that recognized addiction as a disease. It healed the "Whole"person and the persons involved with that person. It rehabilitated the new sober person and taught them a new way to live in the world without crutches. Betty didn't have to do what she did. But because of her going public, she saved many lives.

Still, she fought it and beat it. That's something to be proud of because not everyone can say the same who's been there. Going public was a brave decision though, but unlike some celebrities who think it's all a joke and seem proud of it, this wasn't the case. I don't think someone like that should be the kind to look down upon for their faults, as opposed to the former. I don't care whether or not she had a liberal stand on things that clashed with her husband, she made history and probably made a more positive lasting impression than her mistakes.
