The mumified body of B-Movie actress Yvette Vickers, who starred in cult hits 'Attack of the 50 Foot Woman,' and 'Attack of the Giant Leeches,' was found dead in her home back in April. According to the coronor, she had been dead for almost a year, but her body had not been discovered until a neighbor noticed cobwebs in her mailbox. Last Saturday it appears the cause of death was heart failure. You can read more about the story here. latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/05/mummy-playboy-playmate-yvette-vickers-death-heart-failure.htmlWhile I have not seen any of her movies, this story made me sad because her death had gone unnoticed for almost a year, and that she had died alone.

This is ludicrous. I read that too. How does someone not be seen for a year and nobody checks? How can that even take place?
I could probably see a few weeks. Obviously some people are older and their family doesn't visit that much, and perhaps they're kind of a loner and whatever. Obviously there's a backlog of mail. At some point when mail isn't picked up the post office stops delivering.
That happened with me all the time. Before I was married and I was playing ball I had a small apartment near the stadium but during the off season I'd go home. Home being Northern New York state and I might not come by for two months or longer. After about 3 weeks the box would be full and I'd have to go and collect a big box full of mail at the post office.
Actually, I'd have to do that sometimes during the baseball season too because the team might be on a 8 or 9 day road trip sometimes a 12 day road trip and mail might accumulate enough to fill the box.
Now if this was an apartment, was a remote person paying the utilities and the rent? If so maybe that stays on. Otherwise after about 3 months if you ignore their warning letters they turn it off.
So that brings me to say how does a body spend nearly a year in an apartment and go undiscovered til now?

I also think thats an awful long time not to be discovered. I guess it was a home not an apartment but still theres utilities and other things like Classic said even taxes that must not have been paid unless she had someone who did that for her. That still doesnt explain when you dont hear from someone at all for a year or almost a year, how do they not look inside the house or at least not try to find her?

It was a home. According to another article I read, in Yvette's final days, she became a recluse, shutting herself inside her home, and she had her front door barracaded with 2x4's and duct tape to keep repair men from coming inside the house to do repairs. She also apparently suffered from dementia and paranoia, which is probably why she became a recluse, and that may have been why the neighbors did not notice right away that something was wrong.
She also may have had direct deposit for social security checks, and money for bills was automatically taken out of her account, so that could be another reason why they did not automatically assume something was wrong. One of the neighbor's finally noticed something was wrong when they discovered one of the window's to her house was broken, so they decided to investigate.
Still I thought it was ridiculous, and sad, that it took that long to discover that she had died.

that is really sad that nobody noticed her death for a whole year. I would think maybe someone would notice a smell after a while. it's so sad that she had to go through this alone and nobody with her at her final good-bye. I wish she didn't close herself off from friends.

Let me try to explain Los Angeles, California. We are a a melting pot of diverse people and cultures. We are HUGE as far as cities in the West go. Hollywood is no exception. Here you can be anyone you want to be and as public or private as you wish. No one bothers you here if you choose not to allow them to( o.k.except serial killers and Jehovah's Witness ). Homeless people, celebrities as well as eccentric millionaires have died alone or have remained "unclaimed" In the L.A. Morgue for as long as I can remember. It is not like small towns where everyone knows you . I remember Yvette Vickers. She was in a favorite movie of mine Sunset Blvd. Alas, here you are only a star until you fall from the skies.

I haven't personally seen a post of his [as an admin, I'm sure I could look at his account but, I'm lazy...] It has been a while since we've heard from Pumpkin. You're right Jason needs some attention on his skills. Already 14 years old and still typing with 2 thumbs instead of the right way. That's all his age group and texting that causes that. Sgt Enforcer will rough him up as needed.

Aye. Flog him (with love) 'til he gits his grammar up t' par.
*** In reality: I saw on the news about college kids handing in essay papers that were in "leet seak", recently. The leftist, liberal, tree-hugging professor said, "It's a good thing. English is a living language...blah blah..." This is NOT a natural progression of a language.
