Bob "fireball" Feller formerly of the Cleveland Indians and the first pitcher to routinely break 100 mph on the mound passed away on the 15th of December.
Feller played his entire career for the Cleveland Indians with a 4 year sabbatical during World War 2 when he served in the navy.
Feller's velocity has never really been matched. Theres a few guys who can pitch as fast but not to maintain it as long. Feller could reach speeds of 100 or better in the 6th and 7th innings.
Most pitchers are lucky to make it past the 5th. Most of the time they're fatigued by then are start getting hit. The bullpen comes to work for about 3 innings and the closer comes out in the 9th.

My father mentioned this. He was just here with the kids for the morning.
He was always a fan of Bob Feller. Classic, how would Feller compare to today's pitchers?

That's a very good question. Obviously its one of those things its like the age old debate how would Rocky Marciano fought Mohammad Ali how would it have turned out? We'll never know.
I generally believe that today's players are better conditioned than those of old if not more naturally talented, their nurturing and training programs are harder.
However I do think that Bob Feller and Babe Ruth were so good that they would have been just as accomplished if they played in today's era.
There's another variable too. Pitching very well may have been better in those days. Not necessarily faster averages, since Feller was the first known to break 100 mph and do it routinely now just about every team has a guy who can come in the 100 range. But teams use an 11 man pitching staff today. In Feller's playing days 5 or 6 was about the maximum number of pitchers on the staff. If you're going to have twice the amount of guys on the pitching staff I have to think there's guys in the league who wouldn't have been in those days.

A departure from the origin of this thread but that's ok. Going to a NFL game the day before Christmas is a good sign that you had your shopping done on time. hahaha
But football is a tradition of all winter and fall holidays too.
