i got my schedule for thanksgiving week and all I can say is it is depressing. thanksgiving day I work 2-9pm when some others only get a 4 hour shift. black friday I will be there 8-5. I have never been there that early on a black friday. last year I was there around 10am and it was a nightmare. I have a feeling I will be on checkouts a lot that day when the lines are there. I am always afraid to go to work that day because it's the most stressful day and I get screamed at when something is in the ad and we run out. this will be my 3rd thanksgiving straight working so I thought I would have off this year. to me it still makes no sense to be open thanksgiving. why can't we have a thanksgiving day sale on the day before so employees can have a life. in 11 years I have never had off on a black friday or christmas eve. christmas eve kmart used to close at 8pm but due to custermers complaining they can't finish their shopping and it's all kmarts fault we are open till 10pm. sometimes I wonder if america is just filled with greed? fighting on black friday because you can't go on living if you don't get your flat screen tv. shoving people because it's black friday and shopping has become a fight to the death. all I am saying is the places open on holidays should close so employee's can enjoy the day. poor walgreen's and blockbuster is open on christmas day. I feel sorry for them. I mean if the retail world would think about it celebrate the thanksgiving day sale the day before. because thanksgiving night the place is dead. we would make more buisness the day before.

Yeah, that's bad. I don't think there should be a "Black Friday" and stores should run sales leading up to Christmas way ahead, so there's less of a problem.

Me too Angel. Wal Mart will be open 24 hours and on Thanksgiving Day. I work noon to 9:PM on Turkey day. On Black Friday I work 1: pm to 10 pm. I really don't have plans for thanksgiving so I don't mind. By the time I work on Friday the sale will be over. I feel for you and all the cashiers. You have the hardest jobs.

I have made videos on Black Friday I'll have to make sure I do again this year. I can't ever stop thinking about when I was in 7th grade and the cabbage patch dolls were the big rage. I know it's a different toy every year that gets sold out just after the stores open but that left such an impact on me I can't forget it. That was 27 years ago too.

Our stuff comes in from our distribution centers on before Thanksgiving day . It is hidden in the garden center and we have to wrap in in black trash bags and put it out on the floor at night. We know what it is but we aren't allowed to say anything. Being in our fresh department I have been cut off from black Friday as we don't offer "Food" Specials." It should be interesting.

i agree demona. black friday I am always afraid to go to work because somewhere you hear of a possible shooting that breaks out over that new video game system or someone that gets trampled. last year I herd of a shooting at a toysrus in new york I think. then there was that scary accident where someone died at walmart or maybe it was 2 years ago. I don't like to hear about violence breaking out because of the biggest sale of the year. it's just crazy.
beangirl that's horrible you have to work that long of a shift on thanksgiving. I don't understand why we can't have the sale on wednesday for thanksgiving because it would be nice to have off that holiday. I hope black friday goes okay for you. last year I worked a few hours in jewelery and it was so stressful. one lady I helped at the jewelery counter found me on the floor grabbed me by the arm and said I was rude for helping other custermers when she wasn't done. the thing is she wanted me to show her a watch and I had like 6 people who wanted to see something. if I were to spend 15 minutes explaining how the watch works I would of got screamed at for not helping the others. she told me that I lost a custermer and never do that to anyone again. but after I handed her the watch I said do you need help with anything else and she said no. you can't please everyone. but this year 8-5 I will be on the floor. I am preying I don't get called to checkouts because last year I was told they had lines all the way in sporting goods which was at the end of the store. but you know what I am glad I won't be on at night because they trash the store every year that day the worst and we get out late.
and phil I look forward to seeing your black friday video. maybe you might hear some crazy story that happened at a store you can share with us. I loved the cabbage patch kid dolls. I remember a lot of the toys years ago like she-ra, my child dolls, hot looks dolls, rainbow brite, popples and my little pony. I miss the toys from years ago.

I worked in a department store for a few years I remember that rush. Its just chase your tail for the day and youre pretty shot when the day is over. The whole month of December is a little like that actually but Black Friday is the worst.

yeah black friday is definitly the worst. if I am on the floor I will be happy but checkouts I don't think I can handle it. kmart opens at 5am so I am glad I won't be in that early. last year around thanksgiving we had 3 people quit with no 2 weeks notice. just called and said they are not coming back to work. I had to pull in a 14 hour shift but I don't think it will happen this year. I just want to go in friday and leave as fast as I can.

Black Friday is the absolute worst day of the year to go shopping. I just really can't see the excitement in camping out all night to be the first to get that one item on sale, or getting up at 3:00 am just so you can be at the store by 4:00 am and be the first in line. I do the majority of my Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving, so I'm guaranteed to get the stuff I want to buy for people.
Sorry you have to work on Thanksgiving day Angel and Beangirl. I really think it's dumb that your stores would even be open on that day. Do they not think that people who work in retail have lives of their own, and might want to spend time with family on those days? I also feel bad for those who have to work on Christmas day. That really must suck.

that's right jason it is the number 1 shopping day. lot's of good deals are through the stores. it can also be scary if people get out of hand rushing for items. I learned some kmart blankets that are $8.99 are going on sale $1.99 friday.
i agree fartinggirl. for thanksgiving day sale we should have it on wednesday and close the store thursday. target has off why can't we? I could never camp out at a store for good deals. the cold would make me go nuts. I could get sales after thanksgiving. I have seen parent's with their little kids outside. I once went to a black friday sale at the mall at 8am. it wasn't to bad. I shopped at jcpenny and the disney store. there is no way I would ever get out of bed 3am to go shopping. I would rather shop online and sleep friday.

I'll admit it, I went shopping on Black Friday, but I went around 1:00 pm, and while there were still quite a few people, it was not ridiculous. However I will never wake up at 3:00 am just to be at the store by 4:00, that is just insane.
On Thursday on the news, they were interviewing people outside a Best Buy that had been there since Tuesday because they wanted to be the first in line to get a new TV. Talk about having no life.
