Friday night I was driving along M-37, northbound when my right headlight suddenly burned out.
Not 15 minutes later, in Grant, Mi., I got pulled over by a state trooper.
Everything cleared: My CDL-A, Insurance, Registration, IFTA Certification and what-not, but the pig chewed me out over my DVIR book!!!
My dispatcher recently (about 2 months ago) told me about the 'new way' to fill out my DVIR (Daily Vehicle Inspection Report) and I complied: The first driver of the day [Randy] fills out the first part and I [Me] fills out the second part after my shift.
The trooper tells me that each driver is supposed to fill out his own sheet and I called him on it. Me: "Sorry, man, you're wrong on that. It even says so in the book - right there."
He didn't want to hear any of it and "his word was the final word."
Anyway, I give him my license and stuff and he goes to his car. He comes back and asks, "Are you relation to Robert Mahn?"
I say, "Yeah. He was my grandfather [b. 1938 - d. 2003]" He says, "He was a good man." I says, "Yes. He was. And the cop just leaves. Just like that.
What the hell?!! I mean, small world and all, but how about a little bit of exposition?!!
The DVIR "violation" would have cost me about $400, alone and I'm thankfull to get off Scott Free but, some things bewilder me.

Not relevant to your story but your grandpa was pretty young to be your grandpa. That makes him only about 40 when you were born.
On topic. You're right though with the cop its like anytime you have to answer pointed questions from an authority person the less you say is better overall.

Yeah good point your grandfather was younger than my father. My father is 74 years old. Granted thats on the older side but my dad was born in 1933. And me 1971.
Anyhoo Everybody probably uses some pull to make exceptions to rules it's just a universal thing. If nothing else if it got you off the hook it's a good thing.

Yeah, my folks had me when they were 18 and my Gramps and Grams had my dad when they were 19.
Up until last year I still had one Great-Grandparent - my Gramma Bordner (87 years old.)

Wow...that was stupid. Wouldn't even listen to your explanation or proof that you were right.

Exactly. I'm 36 and my wife just had our 3rd baby last April. I was 25 when Jason was born and that was a bit of a wow for me. But I also know some people I went to high school with and they had their 1st kids right after high school. So they're my age and their daughter is already 18. It happens occasionally.

My entire family is like that - having kids young - going back in the 1640s (My grandfather tracked our family back to a 'Heinrich and Aila Mahn' in Stuttgart, Germany at that time.) [He claimed he had tracked our family down to 1215AD, at one time, but turned out to be a false match....maybe. He died before he could find out for sure.] I'm the only exception to the baby rule as, I can't - as far as I know (and we've tried.) At this point in my family history, the Mahn family name dies with me.
It's weird when you think about it. From several generations back there have been many cousins, uncles and siblings and the entire Mahn gene pool has funneled down to ME - through childless marriages past, war, sickness, etc. I am everything that my family has been. I am the last surviving male Mahn and, I can't have children.
I'm like the modern Shakesphere (his only daughter had no kids.)
Sorry if this sounds sad but, it's a fact I've learned to live with for years, now. My dad isn't very happy about it, though...
Hmm, iteresting how this post about being pulled over has changed.....
