The National League has won the allstar game for the first time in thirteen years.
I am kind of surprised of this. I remember when I was first starting to follow baseball I was only four years old but the National League dominated for a number of consecutive years. I don't think it was this long though.
Essentially the two leagues have the same players because they can intertrade and yet one side has had a dynasty for a long time.
Obviously an all star game is simply a recreation game however in baseball there is something at stake.
Whoever wins the all star game wins home field advantage for their respective league performer in the World Series. I do not believe any other sport has anything on the line with their all star competition.
I spend the early years of my life seeing Mike Schmidt, Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, Gary Carter, Pete Rose, Ray Knight, George Brett, Eddie Murray, I could make a very long list if I wanted to but I watched these guys perform and dreamed one day I'd be in just such a game. Representing either the Yankees or the Dodgers in the all star game.
The Yankees and Dodgers played for the first World Series I remember. So I've favored those 2 a little more than the rest of the teams.
Reality eventually sinks in and one day I discovered I was not going to be an all star, I was not going to be a major leaguer and I was lucky to get as far as I did.
Two major icons died this week.
Bob Sheppard died at age 99. Sheppard was the on field announcer for the Yankees since 1951. The same guy who called Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra to the plate called for Derek Jeter. There's something nice about that.
This morning and suddenly George Steinbrenner died of a massive heart attack.
Some loved him for his endless desire to win, others disliked him for his arrogance some just loved to hate him but the Yankee owner was an icon no matter how you see it. He was 80.
