Classic, I remember when I was in 10th grade Joe Niekro was a pitcher who was on the older side. While playing for the Twins he got suspended for 10 games for having nail files in his pockets.
Have you heard of that and what is it supposed to do?
I know you believe corked bats work what does this do for a pitcher?

There's a number of reasons. It could be as simple as scuffing the skin of the ball gives him more grip. The Niekro brothers were knucklerballers. More likely the use was to tear the strings a bit if the ball breaks a little upon impact with the bat it wouldn't go as far.
If its hit really well even a distorted ball would sail over the fence. Corked bats do work that's why there's so much trouble when someone does that. It weakens the bat in the long run but it definitely gives more bounce to the hit.

Niekro said that the file was in his pocket because he was filing his nails between innings and happened to still have the file in his pocket. Amazingly they didn't believe him.

It keeps your brain working smoothly. Provides neural lubrication.
I'd imagine they "scratch their head" to get some Vaseline on their hands, so they can throw the ball faster (or different?).

That's a pretty good guess from a non baseball fan. The Vaseline on is a way of using the spit ball. Which is obviously illegal. The pitcher would place it on the brim of his hat or sometimes on a part of his glove or clothing where ever he thinks will not be seen. Then adjust the hat and place it on the ball. That gives less spin to the ball and lowers the ball by the time it reaches the plate. A spit ball is hard to hit. If they catch him he is ejected from the game and possibly suspended. That's the pitcher's version of a corked bat its a way of cheating that you only get caught on a rare occasion.

I'm getting comfortable in my new job. This is a little new to me working a job in the context most of the world does. But I'm getting comfortable with it and beginning to mold into it.

I know you will travel less than playing, but you probably still travel a lot if my understanding of your current job is correct.

Sometimes there's an overnight or two but most of the time it's leave in the morning watch a game give my take and send it in. It doesn't have to be immediately because it's not a news story about a game but a over look of specific players.
