There were no other passengers in the Beechcraft plane, which was taking off at 8:45 a.m. when it crashed through the fence of Great Lakes Aviation Services about 100 yards away from the runway on the north end of the airport.
Police identified the victim as 60-year-old James George Wilton of Ontario, Canada.[/b] This is only a half hour south of Demona and I - in aviation speak, that's right around the corner. From what I'm getting from the media explanations, it sounds like he put a piston through the cowling - which should've happened on the ramp during his "run-up" (pre-take-off engine rev). Chances are, if it's his own plane, he probably didn't do a run-up. He was taking off just after picking his plane up from a repair shop. I hope this doesn't put any of you off flying. Statistically speaking; it's still the safest way to travel.

I've never been in one, and wouldn't know about the maintenance involved. It's sad to hear that though. I'd be a little worried if I was in one with somebody who wasn't a pro with it.

When you even think about the many hundreds of flights that come in and out of every airport every single day, there's barely any crashes.
At least 20 major airlines have multiple flights coming into and out of each airport. And I live in a very small city. We do have an airport but its a small city. Pittsburgh and Buffalo are larger airports they're both about an hour and a half from Bradford, and they don't even compare to Chicago, New York or Detroit for travel.
Meanwhile I've picked up after my fair share of traincrashes for the last 19 years and remember they're on a track. They really can't turn left when they should have turned right, or swerve or anything. You can't really go somewhere other than prescribed as you're committed to the tracks and they even crash.
There just are no guarantees.

Well, Demona, I'll have to get you up in the air with me, a true pro, one of these days. I'll even let you hold a "doggie bag", as it's called....
Phil, if you only include the major hubs (read: major airlines) there are at least 5,000 flights in the air at any given hour.
ARTCC records show an average of 50,000 aircraft in the air per given day.
1 plane crashes - it's all over the news.
NHTSB records show an average of 55 BILLION cars on the road in a given day.
300 Million crash........nothing.
Sucks. But, presumably, it's because pilots are held to a higher level than an "Operator" level driver.
..such is life, I guess.

When I was under contract I could not ride on a private plane unless issued written consent from the General Manager. They frown on motorcycles too but the players union has it so they can't put the same restrictions on bikes.

Their reason is kind of bullsh!t I'm afraid. If they were concerned about your safety that would be 1 thing but they're really concerned that if the plane crashes 1 of their best hitters would get killed.
I hate to say it like that but that's how it looks to me.

I hate to say it like that but that's how it looks to me. That's pretty true but that's how they feel and that's how they play it and its their game and their rules. So if you want to board a private plane they have to approve it or you don't do it.

Phil: Are you calling Classic one of the best hitters of all time? I would volunteer to be Classic's PPL. And, I can positively assure that he'd land safely, every time! ....after all, if he crashes.....I crash. I don't allow for that nonsense! And Classic! - No! I won't buzz that water tower!

Uhoh his ego is going to grow on this one. Best hitters of all time? Im sure meant on his team during the season. I see what Mahnarch is saying too. If you crash the whole plane is crashed. I think if the teams manager knew you the gm would approve travel with your plane. But he would have to get written consent from the team to ride in a private plane.

Perhaps we should expand the room, then? Thing is, a C152 is almost impossible to 'stall' (make fly), but, is pretty easily max. grossed (ain't flyin') [600lbs +/-, incl. passengers]. Given current temps, density altitude, winds, visibility and MG (Max. Gross), we'd be pretty safe. I'm pretty conservative. ....no pun intended. ....yes I did.

I should probably thank Phil and Mahnarch for their attempt to boost my self esteem but I'm far from one of the best hitters of all time. Through my career I don't think I ever failed to fall below 10th in the league in home runs or runs batted in. I'd be around 25th for batting average except for 2003 when I was 3rd that was an unusually good season for me though. Everything just seemed to fit for some reason.
For my time frame and the league I was in my stats were successful though.
As for contracts and private planes, once you sign the contract they have the right to dictate that even though it seems like what Phil called it BS.
I would agree but there's no recourse its their format.
