It turns out he was hiding in an attic. He was afraid of the trouble he would get in once his parents found out he launched the balloon accidentally.

The important thing is they found the Boy and he was ok. I can see for his age self preservation was first priority though. ;D

I can see that though. The kid being afraid of trouble more than the other issue. To a 6 year old the punishment is the main issue. I doubt he really thinks about the possibility of getting killed the fear going through his parents and the neighbors of what has happened to him, the unexplainable anxiety when you don't know. There's no fear like that. But a 6 year old doesn't understand that. I have a 6 year old who is a bit of a tear Jason was more refined even at his age. This little guy is more rambunctious and makes me more nervious. He is the kind of kid who might have unexpectedly deployed a balloon and he wouldn't think 'there's going to be a nationwide publicized search for me and the balloon and then if they don't find me they're going to assume I got killed' He would say 'dad's going to kill me' and hide.
So I can see that going like that.

I heard about this on the radio but, couldn't see video for hour later.
Once I did, I realized he was never in it.
It takes 15lbs/in to lift 1lb of solid mass. That balloon couldn't have held more than 50lb/in.
So, the kid either; wasn't in it - or he weighed less than three pounds. Especially to reach that height.
Also, given Density Altitude and the MSL vs Reported Height, he'd been dead and/or brain damaged within half an hour, any way.
They reported heights of 8,000ft. Given that it was broadcast by lay-persons FOR lay persons; that means 8,000ft above ground.
Add in 'field elevation' plus 'ground elevation' plus density altitude (and, if Al Gore is correct) he would have died of hypoxia within 45 minutes after lift off.
Thankfully, Al Gore is not correct and he was only hiding inside a box in his attic.

So I can see that going like that. It's all over the news now. I don't blame the kid, from what I hear about the father, he was a real buttwipe to the kids on the Wife Swap show. It probably wasn't a hoax, but that's what alot of people are saying. There was even a psychoanalyst on TV saying she thought so based on the looks on the faces of the family when the kid was being interviewed. I think it will get more attention than it should.

There's speculation that it was a hoax.
The kid "slipped" and said, "I thought you said we were doing this for a show..."
The interviewer even gave an awkward pause.
I think it was CNN but, I'm not sure. I heard the sound bite on Hannity.

I really hope it wasn't a hoax. But like Mahnarch said the kid said something like 'for the show' on an interview with the press.
To he honest, I just see the good in this. As a father of 3 I'm just glad the kid was all right and if it was done for his father go gain some fame that's stupid but the kid was ok and that's what I really care about more than anything else.

If it was a Hoax, what should be done Legally to the Parents? Should they be prosecuted or just get National attention as being idiots and end it there?

I have mixed thoughts on this. I guess being the father of 3 my 1st reply is the kid was ok leave it at that. That still doesn't make it totally forgettable though. The family if this was a hoax for sure did put out the police force in 2 counties, rescue teams. I think if this is determined for sure that the story is a hoax the kid's father should be financially accountable for this inconvenience. I don't know about an arrest but a monetary fine might be a good idea.
If the proof of the story being a hoax in inconclusive then just forget it. Hopefully this doesn't plant the shepherd boy seed among rescue teams should something more similar happen again. You can never take it lightly and people in those jobs should never assume it's a hoax. I hope nobody does from here.

I don't know if he should be prosecuted but, he should be persecuted.
I'd hate to have him taken from his kids and financial punishment will only put a strain on their ability to provide for the kids.
Make him wear a big 'H' on his chest wherever he goes!

I agree he deserves some bad publicity but Mahnarch is right the kids should be spared as much as possible.
