[His name was changed to protect his humility.]
Big #90 has a new driver's seat.... and a new matress....and has had a complete scrub down by a professional crew.
It's funny now but, last week friday.....naw, it wasn't.
Here's what happened:
When we get strapped for drivers (typically CDL-A drivers [semi drivers]) we hire out to a Temp service.
Actually, it's not really a "Temp" service. It's more like a "smaller trucking company" that isn't doing as well as us but, is giving it the good fight.
When we get into a pinch, we often "hire" one of their drivers in a sort of 'gentleman's agreement' - in order to help them out [after all, we're a faith based company who looks out for his fellow man... competition or no.]
Basically, we pay them to have one of their drivers drive our truck for a run.
We feel for them as, they are really eager to please us because, lately, we are really helping them float along.
Every driver they send us is more than very helpful and is trying their best to leave the greatest impression they can with us.
[It's possible that we may buy them out and bring their entire fleet into our own, in the near future.]
Anyway; We had a load coming back from Chicago that had to be delivered to Muskegon, Mi.
It was 'more than a truck load' [MTL], so we had to send down two semis but, we were one driver short.
We called up [the Temp] and they sent over "John" - within 15 minutes.
The only truck we had left for him to drive was #90.
John was to follow Larry down to Chicago and follow him back.
We didn't even give John directions since Larry knew his way.
The caravan started out and all was well - until around St. Joseph, Mi. [St. Joe.]
Larry noticed that John wasn't behind him, anymore.
Larry slowed down for a few miles.
No John.
Larry called John.
No answer.
Larry called Dispatch and let them in on the problem.
Dispatch called John, several times.
No answer.
....we started to panic.
"Did John jack our truck?!"
Finally, after half an hour John calls Dispatch..
"Yeah... I had a problem.... I got sick."
Dispatch was immediately concerned and asked him if he could continue [secretly, he was our only hope of completing this run].
"Yeah. But,.... there's something else.....", John says.
Turns out, he felt nauseous and rolled the window down before he puked.
As he puked out the window.....he crapped himself - bad.
Liquid explosion....
Jon [my boss, not the temp] asked John is he could still continue.
Eager to please, John said, "Yeah. I feel better, now."
Jon asked John if he had anything he could clean up with (extra cloths, napkins, etc..)
John said that he only had a sweatshirt...
Jon asked if he could clean himself up and tie the sweatshirt around himself...
John asks, "You want me to drive through Chicago wearing nothing but a sweatshirt?"
Jon, "Yes."
John, "O.K. But, I'm going to need a little help when I get there."
Jon called Larry and told him to wait at the pick up point so he could help John drop and hook to Larry's trailer without having to get out of #90.
John showed up. Backed in.
Larry rolled down the landing gear and unhooked John's trailer and re-hooked Larry's already loaded trailer - also closing his doors.
John waited for Larry to get loaded and they left in tandem, again.
At their destination John got unloaded first and got the heck out of there.
Larry took care of all the paperwork, inside.
The kicker:
While John was cleaning himself up, Henry happened to pass by #90 on the shoulder of the interstate and pulled over....
Henry only drives straight trucks and doesn't know about our 'Temp' drivers.
Henry didn't recognize John when he knocked on #90s door to see if everything was O.K. and John poked his head out.
Henry was ready to call the Police but, called Dispatch first.
Anyway, the mess was so bad that #90 got a new seat, new mattress in back - and the Temp service paid for it all.
John DOES still work for them.
We didn't complain about him - after all, it could happen to any one of us - and we tried everything we could to not accept the clean-up costs but they insisted to the point of showing up at the technician's shop and beat us to the invoice.
We feel so bad for those guys and we're still going to use them if we need them but; from now on, we're going to lay plastic down......
[Now that I think about it... this should probably go in the 'Fart' sections... but, it's too funny!!]
