...is my new and permanent status on my football team. I reported to football camp on August 10th, and here I sit August 19th getting ready to leave and go back home. I made it through six days of practice (and did well too) when my knee began to hurt. I mean hurt. It got so bad that I couldn't even push off it or break into a jog without wanting to cry. I missed practice from this past Saturday until now, hoping that my knee would stop hurting and being swollen so that I could return to practice and continue doing my thing.
But that was not to be. I consulted with my coaches, athletic trainer, and doctor, and we all agreed that the best course of action is to basically retire me early. The thing is that I'm not quitting. My coach has been kind enough to keep me on the roster as a full member of this team, meaning any championships we win and other things will mean I'll still be a part of it. I'll be honored and retired as a graduating senior this February.
It is what it is I suppose. I had planned on this being my last season, but hadn't planned on it ending this way.
But what can I do? Nothing else but hang it up.

Man, that is a bummer. Knee injuries suck big time and are hard to get back to 100%. Excellent that your coach recognized your dedication and hard work on the team all those years. Have you considered with your experience of doing some coaching in the future? Get that knee healed up and enjoy the rest of your senior year

Oh Crap Jersey. I am so sorry man. I know how much you enjoyed your sport and how much pain that surgery you had a while back caused. Bummer. You are still a part of the team and I am very proud that you were able to get this far. You should be applauded.

Knee injuries are a real big problem. Any joint injury can be but knees seem to surpass the rest, (except for possibly a Pitcher's elbow.)
It's a tragic thing to miss the Football season again when your last year of College is upon you. But at least you remain on the team and will be decorated accordingly.

Sorry to hear, that really sucks. I know a guy at work who played sports through high school and had knee surgeries one after another. The slightest wrong move can bring big problems. Don't push your luck with it and just do what the doctor says. A lifetime of medical issues isn't worth it.

That's a rough break. I know how much football means to you. You never know though after college you might be able to get that much more healing time and perhaps tryout for a semipro league or the Arena football league. There's always going to be football options even after college.

I agree with farti1 on the coaching bit.
What this really sucks about? How are you supposed to be my personal guard on the Secret Service?!
I guess you could still be my Personal Assistant with the faces/memory thing but, you can't do that very well in a wheel chair.
Damn it!!! And, I so wanted to have a PA around me that was called....... your real name, that I know. (Your name rocks!)

Coaching football isn't something that's out of the question for me once I'm done with college. Especially if I become a teacher.
But as far as my knee is concerned, I can still live my daily life. I'm not broken or in a wheelchair or anything like that. The only thing I can't do anymore is push off or kick back on my knee as an offensive lineman.
Mahnarch, good to see you again. I could still be your PD or whatever it is, just as long as I'm not trying to block or kick back for two hours every day. Ha ha.
I'll be weightlifting and everything like that, and now that my playing days are over I'll probably start dropping all my bad weight.

Coaching is a good alternative.

I'm looking into a scouting position. No decisions have been made. This is most likely my last run at pro baseball.
I have put my name in the free agent pool because I've already been hinted to that no plans are made at this time to keep me here. I'm disappointed because the security of a contract isn't there this year. But I expected that the option was upon them and they activated it with little likelyhood of writing a new contract for me.
Since I'm only discussing and league agents are not Lewasite members I'd take a reduced pay to get an extra season of baseball in if that's what I had to do.
We shall see what happens here. I figure on being retired as a player come this fall. I'm not going to formally retire though because that makes it more likely to get on somebody's long list at for camp.
Jersey I guess we're kind of in the same boat at this juncture.

Hahaha nice. I'm sorry Jersey isn't going to get to play this year though. I feel the anxiety I know exactly how you feel.
