Holland SentinelA few days ago Ottawa County Sheriff's tried to serve a drug search warrant on a GVSU (Grand Valley State University) student's off campus dwelling. Shortly after entering the house a 12 year veteran opened fire on an unarmed 20 year old college student, Derek Copp, for unknown reasons. The Sheriff's Department is being tight lipped on the ordeal and the Michigan State Police were called in to investigate. The Deputy is on on paid Administrative Leave, as is protocol for any discharge of a service weapon. In my own view - the pig got big headed and fired out of adrenaline. Badge and gun. Derek was understood to be compliant. Shy. And, mostly likely a case of mistaken identity or vengence from an ego maniac abuser.

That cop had no right to fire at him. Derek was unarmed, and he wasn't doing anything he should not have done. He was just walking into the house. That cop should have his badge taken away.

I read the article in the paper, the kid was a known hippie stoner, but still there's protocol for things like this and you just don't shoot an unarmed person.

State Troopers have scoured his apartment and found, exactly.....less than one tablespoon of Marijuana in the entire place.
A bullet to the chest for less than an eighth of weed.

That amount of Pot is even a misdemeanor if I'm not mistaking.

if you carry under a quarter or marijuana you are only to be fined.... if you have more than a quarter its a different story.... atleast thats how it is out here where I live.

Mmm-Hmmm....and how would we know that, Mist? I'm a former Cop. I don't know about your history. BG: Usually a (good) cop will smash a roach in the asphalt and let the guy go. An eighth will get confiscated and a fine. A quarter will get you a court date. Anything higher gets you 'Distribution' and jail.

Derek Copp returned to classes last week, for a few days. And had to return to the hospital after he had complications with breathing (he was shot in the lung). The State Trooper investigation is on going. Copp hopes to be released from the hospital by next Monday. The investigation is ongoing. .....for less than a tablespoon of weed. The investigation is ongoing...... The MSP is investigating the Ottawa Co. Sheriff's Dept. The investigation is ongoing.... Derek Copp was unarmed. No weapons found inside the dorm... Less than a tablespoon of weed... The investigation is ongoing. The Sheriff's Deputy is on "Paid" Administrative Leave. The investigation is ongoing.

This is a terrible story. How long does this investigation go on while the officer is on paid leave? It could take 6 months.

The State Troopers have finished their investigation. Now they've turned it over to the Kalamazoo Prosecutor to "see if he wants to press charges against the Deputy." Yeah. We'll see how far that goes....

I hate when the law makes a mockery of justice. That happens sometimes and it's just terrible as displayed colorfully by Mahnarch in his post.
Usually when they say "we're investigating" they do that as a stall effort hoping interest will fade and the situation will eventually be forgotten.

UPDATE!!!!! Woodradio.comOttawa County Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Huizenga is facing a charge of Careless Discharge of a Firearm causing injury or death for the shooting of Grand Valley State University student Derek Copp... Turns out, Huizenga had his fingers inside the trigger guard when he entered the house of Derek Copp when the Deputies served the drug warrant last month. In his rush into the dorm his finger "slipped" and he shot Copp. Charges are going to be brought against Huizenga......AFTER HE RETURNS FROM VACATION!!!!!!! ......AFTER HE RETURNS FROM VACATION!!!!!!! NO! If it were me and you, the cops would be on us like white on rice!! YOU GO AFTER HIS A55 RIGHT NOW!!!!! i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn31/E_16/hulk.gif?t=1239180943[/

That's terrible. I remember a school monitor was up on changes for wrongfully frisking a kid. The found a semi automatic weapon on the kid and he was still pressed charges against for wrongfully frisking a student without probable cause.
Well, I wasn't there what would be probable cause? Maybe it was the end of May and he was wearing a winter coat. Ok, it's not illegal to overdress. He was a gang member and the school monitor knew that. But that doesn't mean he takes weapons to school.
By some crazy chance this guy had a weapon on him and the monitor had no probable cause. Give me a break........

Those things make me sit on the fence.
1) He had a gun. In school. Why? Where was he going with that idea? 2) Invasion of privacy. Profiling. Wrongful search and seizure.
I'm all for gun advocacy. I believe in removing "No Gun Zones" in schools because it advertises to shooters that no one will be armed in the vicinity BUT, a child doesn't belong carrying in a classroom. Only teachers do.
Especially a gang banger student.

I think School was no place for a Student to bring a gun. There's no reason for him to have it other than to either shoot someone or use it as a threat.
I am for your right to have guns but not all the time and not everywhere.

I could see it if they still had Rifle Clubs in schools but, in a ghetto school where there is no shooting range and the kid is a gangsta.
No.

In the paper it said his pay has been reinstated and he'll be working a desk job until things are figured out.

I heard this, too.
I'm irate!
DO NOT PUT HIM BACK INTO THE CIRCLE UNTIL AFTER THE COURTS ARE DONE WITH HIM!!!
The only reason they put him back at a desk was because of the liberal F--- Offs [read: family and friends] who rallied for him.
OCSD didn't want to ruffle any feathers...
Well, they didn't want to ruffle any "Huizenga" feathers.
"Screw the Conservatives" - they may as well have said.
