As you all know (or at least should have a faint idea), I've been an aspiring electronica musician for some time now. But to be totally honest, over the years, my music has just never felt "right" to me. I was never satisfied with the quality of my work because it felt like something was just plain wrong with it. It's been really bad lately... up until a few days ago, I hadn't made anything decent since last January. I couldn't finish songs, I was uninspired, and most of what I did sounded awful.
But I kept on. I kept experimenting. I kept playing with virtual synths. I kept wanting to quit, only to be lured back by a love for the music. I kept discussing music and production techniques with my friends-turned-mentors Tim and Matt while holding on to the firm hope that one day soon, everything would fall in place.
I was supposed to have a date on Friday evening, but it didn't work out. (See, I have met the most amazing young lady in the world, and somehow or the other she found it good to take a liking to me.) But she's done a lot of sweet and nice things for me, and I had told her that I would write a song for her at some point, but not until I felt that my work was of a high enough quality.
So around 12 AM on Friday morning (before I knew that the date wasn't happening), I loaded up my digital audio workstation and decided to write her a song.
Four and a half hours later, I had created what is undoubtedly my magnum opus. I have never created a song of such quality before, let alone in such a short period of time.
Silver Lining - Falling In Love On Accident
At only 129 beats per minute, it's a little slow for melodic trance... but it really doesn't sound like it. I programmed all the synth patches myself with the exception of the bass patch, which was courtesy of Matt. The mix (levels, effects, etc.) was done while using a pair of $5 earbuds (cos I am hard up for gear at the moment), but somehow it turned out okay. (It doesn't sound professional, but it is for the most part accurate.)
Also worth mentioning is the fact that I ruined my health while creating this song. ;D I was up at 9:30 AM on Friday, and I shoveled snow and did outside chores from 11:30 AM to around 4:30 PM. I started to get a sore throat that evening; I spent Saturday in bed, miserable. Yesterday was pretty bad too - I think I had a relapse, to be honest. I'm still sick now. But man, was it ever worth it.
Oh, and Caitlin loves it. ;D
Feedback is appreciated, even if it's just a simple comment about whether or not you liked it.
