I did my knee pretty darn good today during football practice. I found a website that pretty much tells exactly what I did. I'm not sure how long I'll be out because my trainer and I don't yet know the extent of the injury. I know it's definitely my MCL. "Because the medial collateral ligament resists widening of the inside of the knee joint, the MCL is usually injured when the outside of the knee joint is struck. This action causes the outside of the knee to buckle, and the inside to widen. When the medial collateral ligament is stretched too far, it is susceptible to tearing and injury. This is the injury seen by the action of “clipping” in a football game." I wasn't hit by another player though. It buckled out from underneath me during a drill. This really sucks.

OOooohhh, Maaaaan!! I hate knee related hurt!
I've had bad knees since I was around 14 (17 years, now) Basically, my kneecaps dislodge from their bases ad nauseum without any warning or cause.
One will be bad for about a week and then, as soon as it gets better the other goes out because I was compensating for a week with it.
Once in a while, if I smack the bad knee on something (a steering column, for example) it'll suddenly "fix".
It's like 'water on the knee' but, my doctor's have never been able to draw any out when it flares up.
.....I've had soooooo many needles in my knees I hate to think about it.
Keep it elevated and drink many cold ones!

If you didnt tear the mcl theres a good chance that with about 2 or 3 weeks of rest you can be back in action.
Classicblast did something like that last summer. He hyperextended the knee running bases.
At first they thought he could miss up to 6 weeks but he was back in at about 14 days.

I do have a few updates for the members. First, my knee is painful and swelled up like a balloon. It's at least twice the size of my other one. I can't walk without crutches and a knee brace.
I went and saw an orthopedic doctor today. He did a couple of simple tests on my knee to check the damage to my ligaments. He found that my mcl should be intact; the ligament is still there. While this is a very good thing, it still doesn't mean the ligament isn't torn to a certain degree. He also believes that my acl is ok. The MRI scheduled for this afternoon will check everything out. I'll make sure I post up my results once I get them.

Ow. That's why I'm not a huge fan of American football... somebody's always getting hurt, man! I'm not hating on the sport, of course; I just tend not to play it 'cos someone always gets hurt and I don't want it to be me. Last time I played, a guy got smoked in the face and he split his face open nicely... and we were in the water, playing for fun.
Hope you feel better soon, bro.

Got the diagnosis from my MRI today. Here's what I did. I have a sprained MCL. To put it in perspective, I did the same thing to my MCL as when you take a rubber band and stretch it too far, but without breaking it. You wind up with a less elastic band with slight tears in it. That's my MCL right now. This will heal with rest and some rehab.
The other injury is that when my knee popped, I dislocated my kneecap. It poppped back into place on its own right away, but here's the damage. The tissue that holds the kneecap in position is bruised and sprained, which is causing my sweeling. Also, a small piece of bone was snapped off my kneecap and is now floating around inside my knee somewhere. As of right now this does not require surgery. Once the trauma from the actual injury is brought under control, my trainer and I will determine whether or not the bone fragment is causing any problems. If it is, the piece will be removed through orthoscopic surgery. But with a little luck we won't have to do that.
The estimated time I'll be out is around four weeks. The rest of training camp in August as well as the first two games. So my estimation is that I'll return to the gridiron sometime around the second week in September. This is quite a bit of time but at least I'll be back this season. It could have been a lot worse.
Wish me luck in recovery.

Yeah good luck.
I'm sorry you're going to miss 2 games but you will get to play the majority of the season. I'm glad about that.

I'm sorry to hear you got hurt. I am glad you will not miss too much of the season that is worse than anything to long to do something but not being able to is the crappiest thing of all.

I've pushed injuries too. It's not a good idea but watching when you want to play is a killer so I fully understand.

I'm out for the season. The injury was far more extensive than an MAL sprain and a kneecap dislocation. I received confirmation this morning.

I'm out for the season. The injury was far more extensive than an MCL sprain and a kneecap dislocation. I received confirmation this morning. And I'm not happy about it. I'm awful sorry about this. There's nothing more dreadful than an injury that can sideline a player for a whole season. I wish I could say something more helpful.

I remember you saying something about a spring football league. Can you play in that this coming spring rather than wait a whole year to play?

I hate to echo everyone else but I am also sorry Jersey. Make sure you get well and I think Classic's idea is a good one. Prepare for a Spring league. By then you should hopefully be well.

You guys must be remembering times I've mentioned our springball practices. It's not a league, but a bunch of practices in April. I'll be ready for that after my projected 4 to 6 months of rehab...mostly to regain the huge amount of muscle I've lost in my right leg.
