This is a debate at home right now. Jason is turning into a night owl and my wife is a little concerned. Right now not so much because its summer vacation but she's concerned that if Jason gets in the habit of being up late and waking up later that will be a problem when school resumes.
I tend to think that curfews are not the same for everybody. I can do just fine on about 5 hours of sleep. Maybe once in a while I need more but every 2 weeks I might sleep longer once. But that's how it was when I was a school age too. I would stay up or at least awake until 2 or 3 am sometimes and I would get up ontime and I was not tired all day.
Now working overnight shift I get home around 730am and sleep til about 1pm or so. That's enough for me.
Forum members probably know that Jason is now 11 he is usually still awake when I leave for work at about 10pm. My wife is usually already in bed. There's no guarantee when I have to go and my wife is sound asleep that Jason goes to bed at 11 like he is suppose to. But he gets up for school and as long as he does that. And his teachers don't tell us that he falls asleep in class then that's not a battle I as his father cares to pick.
My attitude would change if sleeping less causes Jason to miss school or fall asleep during school. So far that hasn't happened, What's your thoughts?

I almost voted for the Boogie Man post just to be silly.
I thought about it's different for everybody because it is, as long as you get enough sleep by the needs of YOUR body. Even if it's different for someone else. You shouldn't sacrifice sleep because you didn't have time to sleep longer. (Everybody has to sometimes) but don't do it on purpose if you can help it.
You might only need four hours a night but get that four hours if that is what you do need.
I am similar to Phil I don't sleep that much either. I often go to bed about three or four in the morning and wake up about seven or eight.
Sometimes I sleep a little around eight and wake up at ten and stay up til three or later then go to bed for the night.
Classic needs to get about seven hours most nights and he likes to sleep straight through and not be interrupted. He also can sleep longer if there's no need to get up at a certain time he can sleep til noon or later.
NOT ME!!!!
But I know not everybody is the same but I picked a good nights sleep is important because I think you should always get the amount of sleep you need even if that's not a lot, don't sleep less just because.

she is asleep right now but my dad said he will be calling at about 230 and I better be in bed so I am getting ready for bed because I dont want him to get mad at me but im not even tired and I dont have to go to school tomoro so it doesnt matter what time I get up but I still have to go to bed in 20 minits

The thing is Jason doesn't sleep that much or that long. But I still don't need him to be up all night and sleep the day away. I do that with my overnight shift and I hate it.
Jason is off of school for now. Right now his job is to watch his little brother and sister until I come downstairs about 130 or 2pm.

I can't sleep very long, either.
I'm up till 6am and wake up at noon, or so. Sometimes I can stay awake for as many as 3 days - then I'll get my 6 hours.
It sucks but, I get a lot of things done.

Its true the less you sleep the more you can get done.
My brother you know him as Thunderbird isn't much of a sleeper either. He feels as if he has wasted the day or at least part of it if he sleeps until 730 am.
Lets say in that respect it would surprise people that we are brothers. I usually don't unwind til fairly late and I sleep as late as I can. If I have to be up at 8 then I am if I can sleep til noon I do that too.
Obviously I don't believe in sleeping in and missing an obligation but I'm not opposed to sleeping if there's no obligation. I voted in this poll in fear of the Boogie man though. That Boogie Man always scared me.

well phil, jason IS your son. imposing a 'bed time' is an essential part of keeping control. in our household, you have to be in bed early enough until your 15+ then its all up to you. although....my parents never really say 'bed time, get to bed now', they will say, 'oh, aidan, its awefully late' and then you get the hint.
for me, I actually love sleep. I slept 12 hours last night. from 0000 to 1200 (military time XD ) it did feel like I wasted mroe then half the day though. i made a concious decision to get up earlier tomorow though.

I wish I could have that sleeping schedule. I'm just afraid that if Jason was to get in the habit of being up too late he could end up sleeping the day away.
But that's important to get enough sleep and be rested. When school starts the curfew will be much earlier than 230.

His current bedtime is ridiculous he needs at least 9/10 hours sleep. It's what I try to stick to.

Not everybody needs the same amount of sleep. I was never 1 to need much sleep either. 4 to 6 hours usually maybe catching a 2 or 3 hour nap about twice a week and that's how I've always rolled since I was Jason's age and younger.
To clarify Jason's bedtime will be later than 230 when school is back on. But I don't see the point in making him go to bed earlier and not being able to sleep I don't think that would help to lay there for 3 hours of more until finally falling asleep. When school is back on he will have to be up by about 630 and that will make it so he can sleep at 11 or 12.

My Sons are three and one. They are tough sometimes because Sometimes they're not tired at night. And when you need them to be awake to go somewhere they doze right out.
