Oh, man, is it good to be back!
We lost power Wednesday afternoon and just got it back, literally, seconds ago.
The thing that gets me the most is, a few years ago my ex-wife "complained" (to say it, lightly) when I bought a solar panel and set up a battery bank and power inverter.
Well, who's laughing now?
She sat in the dark for three days in her lonesome apartment.
I was able to watch TV and had a lamp that worked. Also, I have an electric cooler hard wired in the garage.
I also have a gas powered generated but, found out real quick that my generator doesn't generate.
Thankfully, I made a junction block that I can run jumper cables to my truck and run the basics (which doesn't include the computer) off of that for those 'not so sunny days'.
***
The weather was so bad here on Wednesday that they had to call in folks from Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky to help fix poles, lines and random damage.
***
What sucks?
Just this morning I went to Meijers and bought a ton of candles, a lantern, ice, some more wiring to expand my solar bank and a new Mag Light and batteries.

This is the greatest, and truest holiday in this country's history.
Saluting our flag just doesn't seem like enough. I feel like I have to do more.

Yeah. That storm turned me into a liar, too.
I told everyone at work that the rain was probably going to be all 'up north'. Well,,,,it showed me - big time!
2ft flooding in the eastern part of GR?! Holy crap!

Holy crap! I didn't know it was going to rain at all. It had been nice earlier the day before. All I noticed was after work in the wee hours of the morning it felt humid. I woke up around 2:45 or so in the afternoon, and heard thunder. I go upstairs and turn on the TV and the news is saying a funnel cloud had been seen in a nearby town. Way too close if you ask me! Our power never went out, but on the way to work at midnight, two sets of lights weren't working.

I remember a storm where we were among the only people that didnt lose our water. Everbody lost electricity. But thats not as bad as not having water.

How did folks lose water? The pressure at the tap is from the height of the water towers - at least in my area.
Maybe the mountainy areas have pumps. I don't know.

That happens occasionally during a hurricane to kind of answer Maharch's question for Kim.
Not always but sometimes a cane causes a water main breakage more due to a domino effect not direct results.
I'm not a utility man obviously but there's other times there's a cane and there's devastation to homes and buildings and water has to be shut off for an area. Obviously that's a case where the storm doesn't cause the breakage but its as if it has because if it affects your street, you're without water.
You don't have to go overboard but about 10 gallons of bottled water should be kept in the house in case of an emergency.

Wow, I thought 3 hours without power in temps over 100.F was excessive. I was wrong. You people with your storms are much worst than our 'flex Alerts" in So Cal.

As bad as that is, I have experienced a couple of icestorms when power was out and that's even worse. At least I think it is. Not that either is very enjoyable. Roasting or freezing.

You know what really sucks?
When your boiling eggs on the electric stove when the power goes out and you've got 10 more minutes to boil them.....and you have no more charcoal for the grill.
....and it rained the day before, so all your wood in the pile is wet.
....and your lawnmower is dry on the gasoline (the power one, anyway) so you can't drain it for starter fluid.

I did learn that me and my only neighbor are on the same circuit, though. So, if the power goes out, again, we both have generators and we can "help each other out".
