Are Iranians so tired of living that they have the nerve to go out in little speed boats and confront three USS Warships?
The USS Hopper, the USS Ingram and the USS Port Royal.
What does it take to be so bold? (or maybe just on a death wish)
I really hope not to expand a war but Iran's actions almost seem as if they're daring US forces to take action.

Sounds stupid to me. What are they expecting?

Sounds stupid to me. What are they expecting? If they go after the bull they're going to get the horns. I swear that some cultures use the sacrifice fly practice. They may very well have sent threatening speed boats figuring the American ships may attack and if they did they could look to the world and say how American forces in their 500 foot war ships attacked little speedboats in the Persian Golf what bullies. That might be a little off but I swear there is such thinking.

I'm sure you're right about them looking to the world for support when they brought on an attack by needling the warships to do it. The U.S. will of course be seen as a bully.

The U.S. will of course be seen as a bully. Oh yeah, according to the rest of the world and several individuals that were in my cultural anthropology class, when asked who the most oppressive nation in the world is, the U.S. is the first country out of their mouths. Other ignorant students who don't know what the f*** is going on really piss me off. As far as the Iran incident, it's ok. The Iranian government said the U.S. made it all up. They're calling it a "fabrication".

The one who gave them the opportunity for higher learning? Oh NO OF COURSE I know it's the most oppressive nation.Love it or leave it! God Bless THE USA

you can sign me up to what the rest of you are saying too.
That's just a dare from the word go. I know 1 thing if there's a big guy on a mission and you get in his face that's a good way to get killed.
When I heard about this I felt the same way I did when that jerk, Dan Rather did an interview with Saddam Hussein before the war started.
Saddam comes out to the camera posing as everybody's grandfather and Dan Rather embellishes that image so that when the inevitable war happens America looks like the bully.

Iran's spokes people said that it's standard procedure to investigate any ship travel through that section of the Persian Golf. US Navy spokes people say that that is international passage waters at the point where the ships were passing through.
I think by now though Iran is aware that the United States is at war with Iraq. I'm sure they read the papers and are aware of that. So wondering what United States Ships are doing in the Golf should be easy to figure out. Anything else can be taken as confrontational.

Though it might appear that Iran is a very oppressive nation to it's women, in fact it's quite the opposite. The Islamic religion preaches respect to it's women, and in fact, in the parliament the women are the most conservative. If a woman has a piece of legislation, if there isn't a women on the opposing side, then it will always go through.
From what I can gather from this incident, yes the Iranians were in the wrong but did the speed boats pose a serious threat? no.

The respect that women are treated with in Islamic culture is different than our western paradigm, but it makes sense to Islamic values. As for the speed boat incidents, Me thinks it's a bunch of bored, testosterone-driven dudes looking to "F" with someone as guys are often want to do. It's irritating as hell, but boys will be boys....

I think Pumpkin has a good point about flexing muscles. That still doesnt mean that flexing them at the wrong person wouldnt have deadly results.

This topic sounds to me like you're trying to make the old kindergarten "HE started it" argument dignified by putting the US and Iran in the mix, though I may be wrong

This topic sounds to me like you're trying to make the old kindergarten "HE started it" argument dignified by putting the US and Iran in the mix, though I may be wrong Fact of the matter is, Iran tried to start something but we were smart and didn't blow them out of the water. Those Iranian thugs got away with their lives because of our leniency. My opinion is, issues with Iran are going to come to a head at some point but we need to wait. They're definitely pushing us, but I think we're going to hold off until things in Iraq and Afghanistan settle down. Iran is trying to build an arsenal of nuclear weapons, and it's my belief that Ahmadinejad will not hesitate in using those weapons to threaten other countries.

It's their funeral. But with Iran and Iraq under our thumb the price of gas will be really cheap.
Truthfully I'd hate to see an intensified war even if Iran did start it. I hope it doesn't come to that. If Iran will just mind their own business it shouldn't have to involve them at all.
The players union could actually fine me for that first statement if they knew who I am and that I really said that. Even for a joke that's not something I'm suppose to say.

I don't really follow Iran's logic at all.
I was a child during the Iran hostage situation the Shah fled when the Ayatollah Khomeini and his regime overthrew the Shah. Iran became no longer a democracy and the Ayatollah put in many restrictions. President Jimmy Carter allowed the Shah to come to New York for medical help and the US embassy was seized and some 60 hostages were captured. 8 were released right away. They were women and black men. The Ayatollah's people never explained why that was but 52 were held in demand for the release of the Shah to be executed.
The Shah had been a friend so that wasn't going to happen. After a stay in New York the Shah was transfered to Egypt for more medical help. He died shortly after. His health was weak.
Right after that Iran and Iraq engaged in a war lasting about 7 years where Iraq pretty well devastated Iran.
With Iran an enemy the United States did support Iraq with weapons and supplies. Iraq won the war without much trouble.
So suppose the guy who whips your butt gets his butt whipped with less than 10 percent of the trouble he had with you, would you challenge the guy who beat him? Not if you have any sense.
Being brave is something different from being ignorant.

I really just hope the war can be concluded and there's no further wars for a long time.
Even though I'm not opposed to the reason there is a war going on right now I just would like to see it finished without having the war extended to another front.

The Iranian speed boats weren't flying any flags, the US jumped to the conclusion they were a threat.
