It's actually not switching to anything automatic, you are just aware of it now. Just like you don't always notice the humm of a heater or computer, or that slight reflection on the tv, or the collar of your shirt itching ever so slightly. Our nerves can only handle one signal at once, so they decide which ones are more important to us. When it decides, it sends a wave of ion imbalance that reaches our brain to interperate the signal. Things like us breathing and blinking, and the humm of the fridge, are usually just not important enough for our nerves to reach that action potential, untill someone points it out.

So what you are saying is that breathing is never automatic and that we do it thinking subconsciously? I was wrong but it still feels that way .
