Angelfish are evil.. Many people make the mistake of putting them in with all the other fish.
Gosh, how old is my goldfish? Pretty old. I remember when I first got him, and that had to be at least 7 or 8 years ago. He was a tiny silver goldfish, and now he's a big fat orange (call him gold if you like) goldfish. We used to have three goldfish, and they all lived for a long time. Goldfish are pretty tough. One of them my sister won at a school carnival, and it was nearly dead when we brought it home. It ended up outliving another goldfish we got around the same time.
We have had goldfish that live for years, and others that live for weeks or months. One tip is you should NOT name a goldfish "Muskrat". Every goldfish I got I named Muskrat, and they always died. Then I stopped naming them that and they lived for ages. Weird, eh?
Baby guppies do absolutely fine in captivity. The only danger is an over crowded fish tank, which will happen eventually. Our guppies seemed to know when to stop reproducing though, so it hasn't been that crowded in the tank.
Good luck with your fish Blastgirl.

I have 2 fish tanks. Goldfish tends to need more cleaning because of the oily film they give off. I have a guppy tank too. That doesn't need as much cleaning. And like I said I'm away from home for half the week sometimes and the fish don't need as much attention. There's good filtering systems that can make tank cleaning easier and less often too.

HI GIFISH! Long time no see. Well I would like to thank both gifish and Hatson for your advice. We haven't started a fish tank yet, but when my Son sees goldfish he gets pretty excited. He says "Old Fik" Funny, he says the same thing when he sees our neighbor. Just kidding about that last sentence. ;D

So are fish fairly low maintenance? As animals go. All animals kept in the hosue need some attention.

I guess goldfish are suppose to have an average of about ten gallons of water to each fish. But some other kinds of fish can do just fine in a small fishbowl.

I think it's that they have some oils their bodies secrete that can dirty the water and create a cloudy environment or make oxygen more scarce. I think if you change the water more often that might not be as much a need to have bigger tanks for them. Also I guess they're more active than most other small fish and more swimming room is better for them health wise.
I'm just reading up on all this stuff because we will soon be starting a goldfish aquarium for our Sons.

No, I do have a Beagle Dog. The two year old loves him. He's the first pet I've ever actually had. (Classic had one like him for almost thirteen years) But that was before we met and I think you probably have read that Classic grew up in another State so we did not know each other when we were School age.
I guess you mean about keeping cats clear of fishtanks?

Heh, I remember when I couldn't pronounce "fish". I always said "FISS!"
My cats have never gone after our fish. Only the birds.. I'd imagine that many other cats WILL try and eat fish, so that would be a think to watch out for.
Fish are very low maintenance most of the time, but when it comes to cleaning the tanks, you have to have a little time to spare. If you keep your fish in an unfiltered fish bowl, the water will need to be changed about every day or every other day depending on the number of fish in it. The water needs to be changed that often to restore the amount of oxygen in it. Otherwise the fish goes plooey.
If you have a filtered tank, then it'll need to be cleaned about once a week because of algae and other stuff that builds up. My mom doesn't change the water every week, and the fish seem to do OK. It depends on the number of fish in the tank though.
You should be fine since you've been researching fish tanks.

They can be picked up and held gently but they don't appreciate petting (Most lizards don't). They love to crawl up your arm and sit on your shoulder. They never bite either.
